I started modeling a low-poly gun for some practice and would like to texture and animate it for FPSC. I'm not sure what I should use to animate my gun, I modelled it in 3DSMax 09.

You modeled it in 3DS max 2009, which you paid $3000+ for? But don't Know what to animate it in?

Each night the Boogie man checks under his bed for Chuck Norris, but he wakes up several times throughout the night to make sure General Jackson isn't under it.

To animate in max:
Select your object
Click autokey
Click the button in the shape of a key
Drag the bar that says 0/100 to another frame
Move the object.

This is what i find easiest, You might want to look into rigging aswell, Search "3DS MAX how to rig a gun" or something in youtube.

On the orginal startup, when you first install theres a great tutorial section on the fundametal animation process'

This should give you the basic understanding of the keys and functions. Then i suggest you broswe the interent or even the great graphics resource for the listed tutorial sites.

If your still having any problems after you'v tried yourself we'll help.

Anyway, I modeled a hand to go with the gun and made a simple walk animation.

So, I've been practicing for a while and I've modelled an M16, M4 and a Combat Knife.

please when you render objects out render them to a lighter background then black. it makes all of the detail far easier to see. because currently you can only see half the models.

btw. you said 2 guns and a knife but you have 3 guns that are the same and a knife...

quik its the same gun with a few slight adjustments between them. the barrel and base of the gun are all the same. because he changed the stock doesn't make it a different gun.

i don't like them. I've said this far to many times. you shouldn't start with guns(I've given up on constructive crits to first time guns)

The larger version is an M16. The smaller version is called an M4, these days (it was called a CAR15 when I was in the Army). It has a shorter barrel and a telescoping stock. It's significantly lighter than the M16 - especially since they made the barrel of the M16A2 so much heavier than that of the M16A1. It also retained full automatic capability when the M16A2 was changed to three round burst (I don‘t know if the newer ones are still full auto - I haven‘t been in the Army for a while and from what I‘ve seen on television, things have changed a lot).

The CAR15/M4 was predominantly carried by soldiers who had heavy loads to carry, like radio humpers or guys going on a long range patrol.

I thought they were 2 different guns, just very similar? I mean, I was never in the military but... nevermind, this isn't a weapon disscusion.

anyway on to the guns, I like them, but I think there a little blocky.

The M16A2 and M4 (Carbine) are both only 3-round burst....when used by the general infantryman/soldier. I'm unaware of a full-auto variant; unless made for other operations.

Actually, I think the newer M16A4(?) has returned to full auto, of course I could be sorely wrong on this one.

But the M4 IS full auto, and always has been.

I don't see how you can talk about modeling guns without talking about guns - at least not real life guns. Weapon manufacturers are always making variants of their products. Weapons modelers will therefore do the same.

What does a model of a Thompson submachinegun look like? It depends on the game you need it for. If it's a World War II game, it'll be an M1 with the cocking handle on the side of the receiver, a horizontal foregrip and a 20 or 30 round box magazine (top photo). If it's for a gangster game, it'll probably be either an M1921 or M1928 with the cocking handle on top of the receiver, vertical foregrip and 50 round drum magazine (bottom photo, showing the M1928).

You need to know your subject, if you're going to make (or buy) accurate 3D models that are appropriate for a game.

I was referring to older models; used in the 1980's - early 90's (probably manufactured way before then). Ones made before the advent of three round burst. If you’ve never seen or heard of a full auto version of the CAR15/M4, they’ve probably all been either modified or replaced since then. As I said, it's been a while.

I think either you misunderstood me or I misunderstood you...

I was saying I thought the M4, and Car-15 were to different but similar weapons.

But to be honest, the 2 weapons get confusing... to me at least.
