Got bored and decided I would start to make some simple medieval weapons.

First one is a battle axe:

Here's the Low poly with 336 tris:

Here's the High poly with 1344 tris:

The highpoly should have more details to it if it's going to be the highpoly. That tape and hand grip you have on it, make that part of the actual model, just a little tiny raised bit of polygon's.

And a normal map would help as well. You can create one from your texture using xNormal in photoshop (assuming you have photoshop).

Last critic, the texture looks... bland. It needs some more visible, well texture to it. I can't see any metal, just a grey blob, and i don't see any grains to the wood.

Great start though mate! Few tweaks and you'll be good to go.

Thanks for the crit. right when i saw this i had literally just added more detail to the axe blade and there is a lot of wood detail on the handle:

And here's the axe head. i guess i should still add more.

your right about the detail on the high poly tho.

EDIT:
I still have to make the handle grip and rap around the axe poke out. all i did was update the texture and add a little more detail to the shape of the axe.

I still can't really see any texture too it. It all kind of blurs together, try making some 'features' in the wood grain that really stick out, add some contrast to the grain.
