The Hobbit blew me away, so that's probably my all time favourite.
I love the Discworld series, but the best Terry Pratchett book was definately Guards Guards, it's so funny you'd never think a fantasy book could pull it off. Stephen King is cool too, I liked The Running Man and The Green Mile best though.
Stephen Gallacher wrote an excellent serial killer book, better than any of the Lecter books, but I can't remember it's name. It was about a man who kidnaps women and keeps them in a sorta cess pit, centers around a woman who escapes from him, only to be caught by him again. Doubt anyone will know, but worth a try
