So heres whats up. Everytime I hit 'Test Game' I get an error that says FPSC Game has stopped working it then closes and then I get a debug error then FPSC closes out on me. I ran the Creator Cleaner and the dump. I then thought well maybe it is something in my level so I ran one of the test levels the game came with and sure enough I got the error again.

Does anyone know what is up?

(Issue Resolved)
If you have Vista and FPSC-Game crashes everytime you try to test game you need to set the compatability mode for the following to Windows XP (Service Pack2)

FPSC-Game.exe
FPSC-MapEditor.exe
FPSCreator.exe
FPSC-Screens.exe

sounds like your anti virus software quarentined the fpsc-game.exe file. Check your virus software and restore it from there and mark it to be ignored.

Nope, not it I checked the quarantine list and it's not on there. Deleted all the files that were quarantined and FPSC-Game was unaffected. I turned the anti virus off and it still gave me the error.

And during the 1.17 beta, until beta 5 cause I just stopped testing the beta I was on break, I didn't have a problem like this.

Edit: I am going to back up my files and reinstall FPS Creator and see if it works

Yes that comes up right after it says it has stopped working.

A fresh install hasn't fixed it either.

I thought maybe it was the level so I put in 1 room with nothing in it except that player start and it still did it.

What we both have in common though is vista, maybe it is a compatibility issue in this version?

Yeah it worked fine for me in the beta, but once the release hit this started happening :/

EDIT: I had malwarebytes scan my PC found a bit of malware that restricted my task manager (I never noticed it), and I restarted my PC and all of a sudden the game compiled perfectly fine 0.0

Hmm then it seems like this error, as unlikely as it would seem, some virus or malware is disabling the use of FPSC-Game.exe
This may or may not be done intentionally, but either way some form of virus or malware out there is affecting the use of FPSC-Game.exe

(Sorry for double post I need to bump this because something happened)

The next day I went to test a game and I started getting the error again. I scanned for malware and all that and I found some and restarted my PC and it still didn't work.

I did get a temporary error log and I am going to hand you guys all the error logs I get so you can find out if it is a compatibility issue or not.

The error logs are in the code snippits below

Here is also the results of my dxdiag

It's not limited to the 'Test Game' function. It even gives the error when I go to build game.

EDIT I decided to experiment around (of course I backed my stuff up) and I decided to replace FPSC-Game.exe with a version 1.6 mod (Project Blue) to be exact and to my surprise it didn't crash right after I hit test game. It started compiling the game for a test!

It did crash as expected seeing as they are two different versions, but only at half way compiling [180] Loading Element Data
to be exact.

So knowing that it was able to run FPSC-Game to begin compiling, at least this version, must mean that there is infact a compatibility issue with the version 1.17 FPSC-Game.exe

So this issue can basically be confirmed that there is a compatibility issue with version 1.17, however with what has yet to be determined.

there is a note from lee in the update forum (rev285) that states that Vista users will need to have at least service pack 1 installed to fix this issue.

Man, Im sorry I am at a loss at the moment. I know this has got to be fustrating. I just went thru your Direct X report and noticed that you screen resolution was 1440 x 900. How about for a test you try setting your monitor resolution to 1024 x 768. maybe, not sure, that may be a more standard disply resolution. I am at 1280 x 1024 on all my monitor in Vista.

Hopefully this will work for you. Also I am assuming you have the latest version of your video driver from Nvidia.

I really hope this works for you.

Nope didn't work :/

What we need to do is get a Dxdiag report of everyone who is having this issue and see what is coming. Maybe it is a specific video driver or something who knows, but we gotta search deep for what is causing this and I hope the developers are able to figure out what's up cause I really love FPS Creator and I don't care how long it takes as long as it gets fixed I am happy.

I would email these reports to Lee, I seen in the update posts that he was addressing this issue. I am sure he would like to get the reports from all that are haveing troubles.

Nevermind I spoke too soon. Not long after I compiled and exited the test game the map editor crashed twice then it won't compile now. :/

Edit: And now it's working again, time to see if what I did makes a difference by trying it twice in a row.

Edit: Nope seems like only ocassionally it decides to work then when I exit test game the map editor crashes

Firstly,as far as I am aware fpsc9 is designed to run in xp using direct x 9.
Secondly, anything your firewall designates as a potential virus or malware should be deleted to protect your system.
Thirdly, if we combine the two and you are trying to run a non compatible program on vista then it will be recognised as a virus or malware.
Hope this helps

Yeah but for years FPSC has always worked on my computer and now all of a sudden with this version it doesn't however previous version still do work. I have downloaded Direct X9 so it should work.
And besides they ask if you have vista to make sure you have the latest service pack. If it was created with only XP in mind then they wouldn't have said this. Although it was 'originally' designed for XP, it must have been adapted for vista. And why else would they offer people who have FPSC X10 the X9 version free since they aren't supporting x10 anymore when x10 is specifically for vista. They know people with vista are using this and are offering people with vista to use this therefore they must be making it with vista in mind.

When I had a horrid time with 1.16.18 I had the exact same as you, it would crash if and when it felt like it

I cured it by running the cleaner, then memdump, then I turned off all shaders and lightmapping and and ran test map and it built fine.

Then after that it always worked flawlessly for me at least

I've just done a light read over the posts so I'm probably repeating some things but you can try the following:
1. Make sure your antivirus isn't stopping FPSC-Game.exe in any way, maybe try disabling your antivirus and testing a game.
2. Make sure your user account has write access to the FPSC folder, if not then FPSC can't write to the directory and it'll fail.
3. Make sure the file and folder structure for FPSC in the 'files' folder is correct.
4. Make sure that you are running the correct version of DirectX.
I suggest installing DirectX using the installer that comes with FPSC to make sure it's definately the correct one, as multiple users have reported it not working with newer versions of DirectX.
5. Try running the FPSC-Cleaner. exe to remove any old dbo files.
6. Make sure you have service pack 1 or later isntalled if using Vista.
7. Failing all that, completely remove FPSC and re-install from fresh. make sure you all folders and registry entries are deleted after removing FPSC then run the install.

Okay I did each of these steps
My anti virus wasn't effecting it. I am on administrator account, but just incase I made it so anything has full access to the FPS Creator Folder.
My files folder is named properly. I tried to use the direct x 9 installer and it said I had a newer version and there was no need to update

ran FPSC-Cleaner
I have service pack 2 for vista as stated
I reinstalled FPSC and updated to 1.17 and yes I was sure to delete the registry keys after removing FPSC.

FPSC-Game.exe still crashes when trying to build or test.
I got so desperate and tried to update to the latest Direct X9, but it appears I have the latest version so that must be the problem

So from the list you gave me the problem is because this version is having trouble with the newer version of directx9

So what should I do?

You can try this to uninstall DirectX back to 8.1, then install from the FPSC installer:
http://www.instant-registry-fixes.org/how-can-i-uninstall-directx-9/

Other than that I don't think there's much you can do.
You could do a re-install of your OS to remove all traces of DirectX and then install the FPSC compatible DirectX but thats's a bit drastic

I once had this problem with FPSC 1.17 Beta (Number 1-7), and what I did is I saved the map, then I actually went to FPSC-Game.exe in the folder, opened it. It was black for about thirty seconds, then it worked.

Okay thats weird Monkey your method worked, and I am able to test game like that, but what do I do if I wanna build game because it crashes during that since for some reason FPSC-Game.exe won't run if told to do so through the Map Editor.

So anyone know what to do?

(Sorry for bump)
Does anyone know why Monkey Mja's method works? Like I can test game if I manually run FPSC-Game.exe, but not if the Map Editor tries to do the command by hitting Test Game?

(Update, sorry for triple bump)
I have a new laptop for school. I am going to test if FPSC works on it (Don't worry I made sure it would be able to handle games ) So if it works on that then woot, but if not then it is probably a direct x issue because I have the latest version of direct x 9 on the laptop so we will find out. Also I have been trying to change the FPSC-Game.exe's compatabiltiy mode to see if it worked, but it hasn't so far. I've been continuing to try to fix this still and can't figure it out. I hope the developers can get a fix for it or something.

okay it works on my laptop which has Windows 7 and the latest version of direct x9

Edit I think I fixed it, going to run a few more tests to see if it is fixed.

FIXED (Again sorry for repost)
I did it I have fixed it and I would like to share the solution with the community for anyone else having this problem.

If you have Vista and FPSC-Game crashes everytime you try to test game you need to set the compatability mode for the following to Windows XP (Service Pack2)

FPSC-Game.exe
FPSC-MapEditor.exe
FPSCreator.exe
FPSC-Screens.exe

it should work after that at least it did for me
