Hey, can someone explain to me how to texture a heightmap?

I know you need a detail texture, and a general texture, but i'm unsure how to create these, do you just open up an image editing program, and draw over the current greyscaled one? or what? :/

Thanks

Each pixel in a Heightmap is generally used to set the height of a point in a terrain object.

You would then texture the terrain object using detail and color maps.

Sorry, i'm not expressing myself clearly at all.

How would I go about making the colour map?

Thanks, and sorry for the previous post making no sense.

You could use an image editing program to blend different textures using the heightmap as blending weights. For example you could have grass and rock textures so that when the heightmap is black you get grass, white gives rock and grey gives various mixtures. You can either do this yourself via the bitmap commands or use something like Texture Maker.

If used this way you would have to scale the heightmap values to the range 0 to 1 in the program (Texture Maker does this for you).
