To be honest I stopped using the checkpoint markers until they stop saving your checkpoint even when your many layers above or below them, as it is a pain when you spawn back on the floor the checkpoint marker is, when you died 15 floors above it and can no longer continue you game, as you got blocked off by rubble on layer 8 of the map
