hi, i usually work with max 4, when unwrap mesh/texture i've a lot of problems with normals:

how i can unwrap without "destroy" normal data? i reset normal with a long procedure of converting in patch, transform in hdsd and reconvert in editable mesh. then export in 3ds and convert with conv3ds.exe.

Unwrapping shouldn't mess with normals.

Usually when my normals flip out I do what I call the vert test where I select all the verts, then weld using the lowest amount. That makes sure there are no verts sitting on top one another. Then I reset the x-form.

If none of those work post the model and I'll look at it.

Try removing smoothing from the model.

yes, smoothing is removed.

normals change when i use the command UVW MAP.

well, get a look to the wings.... the original mesh is a box, then i moved the vertex to get that wing form. but normals aren't in the right position now....

converted in patch, then i use a commad named MOD HDSD, i don't know what it is but it slice the faces and reset normals.

i would like to not use that command. (HDSD)
