I read about this new mag in the newsletter and thought I'd pick one up from my local WHSmiths on the way home from college on Friday. I overcame the £5.99 price tag, got home, tried the DVD, only for it to sound like my drive was eating it. I took it out and paid a visit to the support section of the publishers site, lo and behold there were problems with MY DVD player reading the DVDs that they produced. A firmware upgrade was required to fix the problem, and give me access to the 5gb of utils that most of my 6 quid went on. I downloaded, unzipped and the damn thing doesnt work!!! Anyone else had this problem?

Nope, but then I've not idea what type of dvd player you've got or what firmware upgrade you tried to install. Perhaps there is a better version available from somewhere else?

Cheers,

Rich

It distinctly says on futurenet.co.uk/support/ that DVD drives with the code GDR8161B in their name (mines an LG GDR8161B) should download the upgrade on their page. Many people have had trouble with their DVDs from all their magazines, not just GameMaker.

I quite like the magazine at least, I don't even have a DVD Rom on my machine, so I paid £5.99 for the read. I hope the magazine does'nt center itself around modding too much, because I would'nt call modding 'game creation' at all. Some DB/DBPro articles, maybe some in depth texturing articles etc would be very cool. The best thing is the destinct lack of adverts though, I only noticed about 4 or 5 advert pages, usually every 5th page is an advert for some dodgy shed-run cheats hotline . I wish they had'nt put the lego ad at the back though, the boy spotted it while I was reading and thinks the new Star Wars lego looks propper 'bo - which often results in me wasting more money.

Yeah I thought it was quite a good read too Van. I did notice quite a bit of regurgitation of articles from other mags (3D World, PC Plus, etc) but it wasn't too bad. You should see more from TGC in future issues (if there are any! it depends on sales).

Cheers,

Rich

Yep, a good read I thought, it did seem very mod centered. I was inspired by the warcraft 3?neverwinter nights tutorials to design a sort of complete level building tool. Aside from that, I was disappointed with the amount of space given to TGC products. And still, no reply on that email from their support.
