quote from BOC4J

can i make realistic looking characters (like ones in this game for example http://www.gamethoughts.com/necrotech/screenshots.asp ) with "3D Studio MAX R4.2", i have milkshape, but i cant make modles of that quality with it, but i can get "3D Studio MAX R4.2", for £20 - do you think it is worth it

*cough*

the Trial Version of 3DS Max won't allow exported files to be read by any other program than Max.
This is to stop people getting ahold of it and simply reinstalling every 30days to have full use of Max.

rather than trying export i'd wisely use the time to run through max's tutorials if i were you.
if you still believe that it is worth it either cough up the cash for the full product or download Gmax 1.2
