pdidy posted this in another and warrants an answer. Also had a few or so emails swearing me calling me some banned words here. Also not to derail another thread.

Quote: "you said in this post that people dont like you.
people love you ideas and work and respect you for that,
but like most probally think you are the (UNDISPUTED) champ
of sarcasm on the boards, and most of that sarcasm borderlines
on a banable offence. if you find that people are not commenting
on your work and you cant undestand why, perhaps you could consider
being nice, i fortunatly can look over that kind off sarcasm.
even though it is seen as the lowest form of wit, but there is
the younger generation that cant. and these are the people who
think whats the point. i often thought why you never got a valued
member or some other stautus for your work, perhaps you could be
nice if you tried."

Now for this...part lets settle the matter once and for all.Sarcasm is a great way to break the ice as well as bring some fun into a "dead" serious discussion sadly people do not get it or find offense in it.Frankly I DO care what people say as after all you the users have to use it after all.

So personally if there is no feedback or limited feedback why should I continue supplying free Ideas and free meshes for some one else's gain that doesn't even say thank you "thanks for the download". When frankly when a new users posts a textured box gets more feedback? A 4x4 room segment gets more feedback?.

There have been numerous re-textures of meshes in games I have seen, I have seen threads where users claim stuff as there own work.Even some people selling or repacking media into other packs. awhile back.

Is that fair, continual abuse can only lasts for so long.As for being nice, I am I nice guy ask EAI, bootlicker, shadowtroid, keithc ect... I however believe in a honest opinion and want a honest opinion as well so that might come across as being a harsh person one of the main reasons I keep to my self and do not reply in wip threads as such.

How many, I am remaking doom threads without light mapping do you have to see and try and point out that you need light mapping in a nice constructive way...

Only to be verbally attacked. So yeah I love the community and the people I have spoken to before and know.Just fed up with a younger person telling me what game development is about....

What do you think? I am being irrational for removing my self from the free media abuse?

*edit*
I forgot about that value member thing I do not want it I wanna be me.I do not want to tippy toe because of it period without it there are no expectations and I have freedom to be me...sarcasm and all..

Just been chatting to my neighbours teenage daughter and it turns out she's big into UFOs and aliens.

Which is cool because tomorrow she's getting abducted.

First of LoL for the quote And you have to understand that sarcasm on the web is a delicate matter, and can be mis-understood.

And I am giving my honest opinion, IF you give to a "newb" a honest and constructive opinion on his/her work and they verbally attack you, I think that you should not care about this person. (They are probably someone that is new to game creation and most cases minor that thinks if you give critizism, its bassicly telling you that its bad or not good enough for this forum)

I think personly don't bother to help someone that havent asked for help, if they do need help give them ideas not meshes(if its a minor they will most often not even thank you, stay away from such threads)

If they need help to a decent project with nice and constructive effort give them it, but judge them by work or their posts.

And I think that its stupid (but i understand that if your work is claimed that it can be irritating) of you to get hung up by what someone says on the internett people always are mad and or angry on the internett because they can say what they want to without having someone to judge them(Because they think they are hidden).

Try to help someone that is nice keeps themselves proffesinal in their posts.

And what you said about your things being claimed by others, that happends to everyone that delivers a certain amount of media on the internett (EAI or Bond are good examples), try to get them banned by contacting mods. You just have to deal with it like everyone else. (Trying not to be rude)

The internetz is teh evil!!!Sorry but this has been happening for a while since I started making meshes...Sadly I have had a few nasty emails about earlier stuff I did in which some numb skull complained about it some thing along the lines of why can't you make segments like the rest of the users I can't see what I am making....referring to the solid concrete meshes...

Then trying to nicely explain how they work my mother got dissed. Then some idiot last week wanting me to make some meshes for a pack he wants to sell on the forum with my re-textured mesh and stock one as an example screenshot.

I think that was the last straw....

Just been chatting to my neighbours teenage daughter and it turns out she's big into UFOs and aliens.

Your post contained too much advanced english (at least for a non-native speaker), so I wont dig in too deep. But I agree with you.

As I understood this is mostly about giving feedback to people on the forum.
There are always people who takes everything the wrong way. And since we are in a forum where the only thing we can judge a statement on is the text, not visually by seeing and hearing the person.
Saying "It looks OK" in "real life" could actually be quite positive if its said in the right way.
But since we only see the text "It looks OK", we almost automaticly takes this as a negative statement.

Maybe thats why they invented the smileys

Maybe I got the whole thing wrong?

Well..do what you have to.Abuse when giving away free media is unacceptable , a spit in the face of the creator...

Make your work paid. The people who like it will buy it,others wont. You won't need to worry about feedback then either.

Your decision is definitely not irrational.

That is what I want, I want some one to tell me listen move that vert or remove that poly perhaps and every now and then I do get feedback like that and I thank them because I do not get feedback like that

I have inserted a screenshot as an example to me it looks good to the next person it doesn't I need to know about it as the end users uses it and I want it to be productive as possible. No point in making stuff if you give a false impression download it and then not use it why did I waste my time then...?

An illogical view?.
It is not about it being popular it is about improving so that users fall in love with it and become popular because of the feedback that help me getting it from the ok remark to a great remark.

Like I said it is pointless creating a thread where I double post in it and speak to me self.In future the thread will just pop up when it is done.

Also I want to make an official pack so that is why I was pressing for feedback, as that is a goal I want to reach...

Idiots are everywhere. You just ignore them.
It's the unwanted crowd, it's the group of racist 10 year old rageboys on Xbox going into lobbys and pretending to be parts of gangs. You just laugh at them and move on.

Also, you have to remember, tone and hand gestures do not translate into text. I can be hard to tell between sarcasm and someone being a (for a lack of a better allowable term) jerk.

Overall, don't sweat it. Idiots will be idiots.

For some reason you get more constructive feedback when you are a complete rookie than when you are more experienced.
Experienced users need constructive feedback aswell.
Otherwize they will stop learning (at least most of them would).

The simple reason for that is people are far less worried about getting a tongue lashing from a rookie (as you call them) than an established member. Or they feel they are not worthy to comment on the better known members stuff because they are a newer member (in my honest opinion)

You only have to see the many topics where other members come out with utter rubbish about newer members not being able to dispute the opinion(s) of the (so called) established members to see how new members can be scared off

On a more specific note regarding comments on Wizards tunnel packs:
It is very very hard to keep commenting on a load of tunnels for many members. In the end a tunnel is a tunnel is a tunnel, no matter how many times it's shaped/textured or anything.

I myself have posted many comments regarding his excellent tunnels and totally love them and highly regard his obvious skill. Yet I really don't have the time to keep downloading them and testing them, then commenting on them and I suspect many members have the same problem of time. Many less skilled members would also be daunted with trying to use them, so can only comment on screenshots and a lot of the screens looked the same as before with subtle changes many may not even notice

Even though I am right behind Wiz going away from the free route and even stated a few times that we get so many "I want this made" topics because so much good stuff is free. Yet treating the forums like a game of CoD and rage quitting is not really the way to go (in my opinion anyway)

Hi WoID,

Yeah, I have to agree with the sentiments of those alluding to the fact sarcasm is lost on the internet. As goofy as they are; sometimes smiley use is the only way to use the dryest forms of sarcasm and even then it's gonna be lost on some. I personally thought you were a bit unapproachable until having the pleasure of spending the time with you in IRC when that was up.

Regarding lack of comment and feedback for your work, I'm as guilty as can be. I think you do fantastic work but you very rarely hotlink images and I'm too lazy to click the button. I know that means others are too lazy as well. Beyond laziness there's a bit of self-preservation involved as well. I think over the years I've been trained to not click the attachment view button because 99% of the time it isn't worth it. My outlook has always been that if you're proud of something then hotlink images of it; dial-up users be damned.

Nonetheless, I am totally happy to see you come to the professional/mercenary side of the isle. I think your work is definitely good enough and given your level of mastery of the segment world it's probably time you become your own harshest critic. If you're making something that will be free you will always have the option of half-assing because the small voice inside your head is whispering, "What do you care? It's free! If anyone complains, who cares? It's Free!".

I bet you will also start getting more of that honest feedback you desire once the exchange of money is involved. Why? Because now both parties will have a vested interest. If something is free, people have been trained to not give honest feedback on these boards because it's been shown to bring the gravy train to a screeching halt. Too many times we've seen artists say things like, "You don't like it??? Hey! It's FREE! Screw you guys I'm taking my free models and going home!" Then the leecher's freak out and scold the person who commented by jumping in with things like, "There you go scaring off another generous member! It was free you thankless idiot!". This of course has no regard for if the media was complete rubbish and a waste of HDD space. By taking things to the next level you won't totally eliminate it (you'll still have "It's so cheap why are you complaining?"... but at least that's logical) but it will drastically improve things both in terms of higher quality feedback and in terms of you pushing yourself. It also, IMO, improves the general culture of the community when even small transactions are being made. Because... People who are serious about their hobby or dev'ing expect to pay at least a little money for something that's usable and of quality. And... People who tend to be serious about their hobby or dev'ing tend to not be noobs. Lastly... A culture of free does not promote competition and a lack of competition usually leads to stagnation.

I wish you all the best in your further endeavors, Wizard of ID

No news is better than bad news.
I gave away every model I made when I first started out, and I got some very bad feedback.
The criticism is welcome as long as it is constructive, but some people just like to bash stuff and I would rather have no reply than that.
Anyway, I stopped giving away every model because I felt bad about my feedback, so you are not alone.

I'm guilty of not looking at everything too, and usually time is the factor so I look at many threads without taking time to post a comment.
I do reply to new users more because I think they need more encouragement, but maybe I am wrong about that.

So, I apologize if you feel that I have ignored your posts because I didn't ignore them, I just failed to post enough replies.

My advice:
Enjoy doing you own thing regardless of the feedback (quantity or quality), because pleasing others is much harder than pleasing yourself and it is your happiness that matters most.

Hey Wiz,

I'm relatively new here (okay, I joined in 2008 but had a bad accident and was not capable of tying my own shoes, let alone work on a game lol!) but hardly new to message boards. I am a mod on a site with over 20,000 members. There are always going to be personality conflicts. Its how you deal with them that changes the outcome. Said kid knows it all? Then let said kid pound salt and ignore him. He'll act like an idiot and get himself banned quickly enough.

I want to thank you for the work that you do. I haven't used any of it in a real project yet but your work is amazing! On the other hand, I'd like to relay a story from my wife.

Years ago she worked at a nursing home. There was a nasty woman who always cursed at her and was just all around mean. One day my wife brought her a book that she overheard the woman telling someone she wanted to try and break the ice. The woman took it and just started reading. Wife said "Aren't you going to at least say thanks?" and the old lady replied "Did you do it because it made you feel good or because you wanted praise? One has nothing to do with the other!"

Man, she must have been one rotten old biddy

Point is, take the high road. What you do is great and a few fools can't take that away. Do it because you enjoy it, man, and forget the people who don't appreciate it.

Anyway, the ignorant people will weed themselves out in time and seldom produce anything worthwhile for all of their self-righteous blather.

Now go praise the model I posted earlier today!

Feedback, comments, pats on the back etc when I give away stuff really don't bother me one bit to be honest. I don't even bother bumping my topics when they drop off the radar, if someone wants what I made they seem to find it. If people wish to say thanks, then that's nice too (and always appreciated, as are any crits good or bad), but that is their freedom to do or not do and not my given right to receive, just because I gave away my mediocre media for free.

The day we start demanding thankyou's everytime we give away something is the day they are no longer free. As we are asking for payment in ego boosting back pats (in my own honest opinion)

There is enough self glorifying egotistical rubbish topics appearing fast as is, they really don't need me adding to the problem and I have no intention of doing so

Free means Free as in no payment required be it money, thanks or flattery zero payment, gratis.

I give thanks (and maybe a little well deserved flattery ) where it is due to people who totally amaze me with their skill and design.

Disclaimer:
I'm an old man and tend to say what I think most times and if this offends peoples ego's then sorry, it's just the way I am.
I'm not here to win popularity contests, just to enjoy my hobby, help a few people out if I can and learn from all I can.
The biggest payment I could ever get is to see something I made or helped with being put to use, no payment, thanks, credits required other than that

I agree with you here, Wiz. I would say more, but I am sure someone on here would find fault in me saying just this. I think you do great work, along with Bond1, Eai, Rolfy, Wehtam, Cosmic and a few others on here that have gain my respect. Unfortunately, the ones I respect, don't share the enthusiasm with me.

Keep up the good work and know I will appreciate your work.

WID: I completely agree with you... When I first joined here, I had to wait tilll around 100 views to het 1 post... Compared to that it's gotten much better!

I also agree with you that people don't give crit, although I'm still a rookie (and rookies supposedly get more constructive crit ?), and I appreciate it when guys like Nbt come in and tell you what you're doing wrong, and what you could improve on (I appreciate it mate).

Sorry if I haven't posted in your tunnels threads... I've always read through them and looked at them because I've never actually had the patience to sit down and finish a game (modeling is a lot more fun for me ). I'd just like to say thank you now, to make up for every time I've read your thread and not posted...

Cheers,
Anayar

Hi guy

Thanks guys far too many comments quote I will try and quote the best bits I like.

Quote: "I would purchase the tunnel pack. I'm just worried you won't come through with it."
Lol I am just more worried about over doing things and approval from lee.So I have gone and checked every mesh, uv map a few times to makes sure every thing is perfect.I have to do a few tweaks as it is.
Quote: "
In the end a tunnel is a tunnel is a tunnel, no matter how many times it's shaped/textured or anything."
Well I wouldn't completely agree...since it is still a step up from a flat wall Insert ^smiley here*

Quote: "Even though I am right behind Wiz going away from the free route and even stated a few times that we get so many "I want this made" topics because so much good stuff is free. Yet treating the forums like a game of CoD and rage quitting is not really the way to go (in my opinion anyway)"
Frankly custom stuff yes, I still have to do another project stock media upgrade part 3 so the statement isn't completely true there will still be free stuff in the pipeline however Lee did offer to have a look at them if they are good enough some sort of funding could be worked out..

Quote: "
I personally thought you were a bit unapproachable until having the pleasure of spending the time with you in IRC when that was up."
Lol good times I miss it, damn that just wants to make do it all over again and fling insults at Coz when he is drunk....

Quote: "think you do fantastic work but you very rarely hotlink images and I'm too lazy to click the button. "
I hate hotlinking because when some one trolls a thread in a few months time being greeted by a blank screen...then again good advise will try it in the future.

Quote: "Nonetheless, I am totally happy to see you come to the professional/mercenary side of the isle. If anyone complains, who cares? It's Free"
But still even free stuff needs to perfect or at least a few steps away from perfection
if you want future free users.

I do think, people do not really understand how difficult it is getting a doom or quake look a like level into FPSC not that I try and make them FPSC will come to a grinding halt if you try...But I do try and add elements where I can without hitting performance too much.Still that is really hard as you need to think as both the modeler and player as how he will try and abuse the level and make it "fool" proof it is not that easy.

But still making a set like this is relatively easy by now but still it is not as easy as it looks getting mesh alignment correct so that each and every mesh is universally exchangeable with the next one.Curves are a major issue in fpsc but I have my ways at least.

I have been wanting to test the waters a couple of times but just didn't feel ready and instead released it for free.So I finally feel confident enough to send it off to Lee with my eyes closed a quickly running away and hiding behind a bush just in case.

So removing the free media wasn't directly related too not getting feedback but rather the idiots that abuse it by re-texturing the some stuff I didn't give permission for or repacking them ect.

I requested a lock in thread because I was talking to my self..I like showing the progress from simple mesh to final product I guess people do not care much for that these days.

Quote: "I would purchase the tunnel pack. I'm just worried you won't come through with it"
But to get back to this. This is not another run of the mill free pack so every thing is getting poured into this every angle gets checked at least a few times a day every change gets rebuild and checked with full light mapping.

So it is going to be silent for at least another few weeks.Where I tweak and re-tweak.

Just been chatting to my neighbours teenage daughter and it turns out she's big into UFOs and aliens.

Which is cool because tomorrow she's getting abducted.

Unless of course like today you realize a triangulation problem across numerous meshes that results in bad light mapping....That pretty much sets back a few days of work going swoooooooh !! I think that is why god created backup...well at least in this case...

Coffee is good, beer on the other hand is better of course if you want troll the forums at 2 am and shout random insults at unsuspecting victims. But seriously the "no matter what is takes" is a bit extreme, it is not like I am going to run over a granny at a traffic light to get home a soon as possible to get some work done...There is no rush well till at least end of next month when we will hopefully be seeing some collision issues fixed, so granny is safe till at least mid next month....

Then I can make no promises for her safety

Just been chatting to my neighbours teenage daughter and it turns out she's big into UFOs and aliens.

Which is cool because tomorrow she's getting abducted.

I've been reading through this thread, and now I feel like a complete hypocrit.

I am one of the fortunate noobs who has been given plenty of valuable help and advice. I have tried to be polite and thank people when they have helped me out. A couple of people have made models for me, and again, I have said thanks to them.

When I've been told that I don't need to be so polite, I reply with 'politness costs nothing'.

Then, I go against everything that I have said, and visit your tunnel threads, download them and not say a single word. Not just in your thread either. I have downloaded planty of free stuff without so much as a 'thankyou' or 'nice work'.

So, I would like to take the opportunity, here and now, to apologise for my hypocrisy, and say a big thank you for the free tunnels that you have been good enough to create for us. Also, while I'm on the subject, I thank all the other talented modellors, artists, scripters etc etc, who are good enough to provide such outstanding media for nothing.

From now on, I will not take free stuff for granted. I may even start attempting to make my own media!

I game therefore I am.

bruce mate don't feel bad. Every single one of us at one time or another have joined a place like FPSC and gone mad downloading everything we can as fast as we can like kids in a candyshop

It is only natural to be so excited just dying to try them all out and play and hopefully learn our new toy(s)

I know I for one have done it when I was new to all this, so once again don't fee bad mate
