FPSC Classic Product Chat / what does dds stand for?

This has been bugging me for a while, I keep seeing all of these files in .dds format and I can't figure out what it stands for. I'm pretty sure that those files do something with object textures, at least that is what I have to apply to something in the entity maker to add a texture. Does anyone know?

.dds = direct draw surface... it is a standard texture file used with directx
