I saw mention of a team request section in the newcomers area. Where can I find it? I don't see one anywhere. Has it been removed?

Probably. Team requests are usually frowned upon here.

But maybe you were looking for this:

It might be for DBC though...

As much as I'd like to, I have my own stuff. I'm sure that thread is great but I can't commit to another project. I'd just make promises I can't keep.

Why is collaboration frowned on?

Collaboration isn't frowned upon... team requests are.

The difference is most team requests are done by newbies that don't bring much to the table of collaboration. The newbie team leader usually expects the other members to do their bidding to program their dream game without even trying to learn anything about programming themselves. That's why 99% of team requests aren't allowed. The only exception is Dark Noob Games.

That's the most annoying part of newbie team requests. The newbie basically says "Once I make a million bucks off your hard work I still won't pay you but I'll give you credit for helping me get stinking rich." If they do actually mention the person that helped them their name is usually on the screen for a second or two.

Collaboration isn't frowned upon, its just a lot of the time you'll get someone saying "I NEED THIS THIS AND THIS PROGRAMMED BUT I CNT DO THIS THAT OR THIS BUT I CAN <insert minor and relatively easy thing here> PLZ HELP NO PAAYMENT BUT I GIVE CREDIT"

An acceptable team request would be one where you already have *at least* proof of concept if not a good start on developing the game.

Gotcha...so how does one go about finding a long-term collaborator or two? I have a friend nearby, but he isn't interested in my project.

Also, DBPro is the extent of my programming, and it is as far as I want to go. I saw a few posts mentioning C++. Should I be expected to know more? I assume not, since this is a DBP forum and the claim from TGC is that I can make full games with their products.

I wouldn't get too hung up on finding a long term partner (lol). Really, if you start developing and run across a big problem, you can ask for help here, and people may spend a couple hours trying to come up with a solution for you ('Cuz thats what bored forumers do ).

I'm more interested in the graphics end. I really, really suck at models and animations. It's a long way down the road too, just curious.

Placeholders are the thing you want. Try roaming around the forum a little for free media and use that. If the base for your game is finished, then you can ask on the forum for a graphical artist to help you. If a graphical artist thinks your game is good material, you're likely to find someone to make your custom media.

I'm not sure if you can find high quality without paying for it though. Most graphical artist that can produce more advanced graphics come with a price...

Cheers!

Build a reputation - help people with code, give advice, get good at the bits you can do, be dependable.

Then, once people know you, you may be invited into an existing team. Or you can start your own game and invite people to join you.

If you decide to go public with a team request post, then this is required reading.

I wouldn't dream of not paying someone! That's craziness. I imagine though, that if most posts on the topic say that, they probably are shunned.

@IanM: Thank you, that is what I was looking for.
