Wow, this is the first time I've asked a question in a long time, lol.
I've been toying around, and have even built a simple particle effects generator.(Will mainly be used for weather effects.)
Though there is one effect I've been killing myself to get. Maybe particles might not be the best way to get it though.
If you've ever played ESF(DBZ half-life mod), then you may know what I'm talking about.

Just take a look at those screenshots. Pretty neat huh?
How should I go about achieving a similiar effect? Maybe I make a cylinder and just stretch it out, and slap a texture on it?
I am doing a fighting game that will have similar effects just like ESF.

Definitly possible to do with built in effects
Only pictures I can give you are the refrence ones above, other wise you'd just need a solid color of some sort.
