Hi,

I've been playing around with google sketchup. I have made some white picket fences stuff and i would like to know what you guys think. I'm thinking of selling these or something. The are not textured but the texture would be just white . Now i know these are not the greatest things that are out there but these are my first 3D models ever.

Now alot of pics:

Fences:

Poles:

Arc Fence:

Ive also done a larger fence but i'm still working on that for a bit. Tell me what you guys think.

They are maybe way too highpoly. You could make that lower panels with trasnparent texture.

Check for pure horror.

Hi redostrike, welcome to the world of modeling. I too used sketchup before, and while some people can make some good stuff in it, you probably wont get very far into modeling with it.

This is just me personally, but i think a solid foundation into one of these three (free) modeling programs.

Anim8or

Pros:
Easy interface
easy for good workflow
Cons:
Not the worst rendering, but not good
bad uv mapper
alot of mesh errors for no reason (when other programs it wouldnt)
and bad subsurf tools ( highpoly making )

But despite all those cons, i used anim8or for probably a year and a half, and i made some pretty decent stuff, but now i have a firm grip on the basics and thats what you should do to but sketchup is not the best way to do that.

Blender
Pros:
Good Uv mapper
Good subsurf
Edge loops ( very useful tool )
Sculpting tools (very good in 2.53)
So many more i dont know yet.
Cons:
Not friendly if you dont know what tools do
Mainly hotkeys (the reason for this is fast work flow)

my biggest agitation is the mouse1 doesnt do anything except move this life jacket crosshair thing wherever you click getting it in the way hahah. Everything is selected with mouse2

But some improvements are that theyve added customizable hotkeys (in the new beta, errr or one of the ones coming out soon)

Im using blender right now because it is 3ds Max *Capable. Some pretty amazing stuff it can do.

And finally

Wings 3d

im not going to do a pro/con list as i havent used this one extensively.
But what i can say is, it has a very easy layout to follow.
A nice big viewport, complimented by uv mapping, some say wings 3d has the best uv mapper but i never really could figure it out.

**************

I almost forgot, if you are in highschool (im pretty sure) you can apply for a student version of 3ds Max, which is AWESOME since that is one of the standard programs in buisness.
The only thing student version means is you cant sell models made by that.

But, that should definitely not be a big obstacle to overcome. Unless you endup absolutely needing to use max in which case you need 3,600 dollars.

Thanks all, i cant lookup the poly count at this point the modells are on my laptop and i cant get to it right now. I'm not sure what would be high poly for these models. I'm also not ready to do uvmapping as of yet i find it a bit complicated at this point.

@Master Man Of Justice: Thanks i have looked into anim8tor a long time ago, and i have blender on my laptop but i cant seem to draw anything like i did in google sketchup.

I will look back to animator this afternoon though and find some basic tutorials to get me started. I just want to make a few random nice models to toy with not the major ones and stuff like that. It's just that i can get myself going onto some game idea's i have in mind. And here and there get some few $$ to help me pay for my webspace and small stuff like that.

I'm also sorry to tell you that i'm not in highschool . I'm 23 years old (here in belgium we are done with school between 17-22 if you go to "highscool" your 11-12 and then 6-7 years school and then you can (you dont have to i stoped for school at this point) go from there to university and those years depend what you wanna follow normal course are 2-3 years courses like advocate and doctor can take up 4-6 years but that all depends offcourse) so 3dsmax is not an option for me i can look into a trail version but i would not use it for models to sell. I can get one through my girlfriend cause she is still at school.

Also i want to thank you for your feedback i will try and get some models done in anim8tor some small easy stuff to begin with well see.

alright, your models are decent, but they wont work in games due to the amount of Ngons, (polies with more than five verts) I say you switch to blender 3d.

Oh and visist[href]www.polycount.com[/href] [href]www.gameartisans.org[/href] regularly, professional artists go there, and you can't beat crits from the pros

I have been fidling with those 3 programs and anim8or seems the easiest one of them. I'm going to try some stuff out in there but i think its alot harder than google sketchup. Anyways i'll learn while doing .

it is alot harder then sketchup, but its not really in a way. Because once you learn, even something as basic as anim8or you will know what it means to do an edge loop, uvmap, bridge faces and edit based on vertexes.

I look at sketchup as more of a world creator.
but still , even then, cartography shop is free.
i mean, i can easily do what sketchup does and alot more with anim8or,blender, and now i finally got my student max lol (learning the interface and hotkeys now).

I remember being where you are now, and trust me heh, its a long road ahead. but when you even get half way there you feel awesome after every model you make.(then you realize damn, now i gotta uvmap and texture xD)

Thanks, i have made the hand tutorial on anim8or website just now. I'm starting to understand how the program works. So it and mostly how it feels. I like some stuff better then sketchup already. UVMapping is still far away and i will be picking up some other tutorials before i start making something on my own but still this is so much powerfull then sketchup. Thanks oh and here is a render of my hand.

pretty good hand, classic tutorial

im just gonna let you know from right here, manipulating your models will be easier then how anim8or does it, modifiers are fairly easy, for fixed movement.

Later you will learn rigging (anim8or cant export that though).
Rigging you will assign a group of vertices to a bone and whichever way you manipulate the bone the verts will move, so essential, doing what you did with the fingers, but you can use it for animation and you can move them with a simple rotation or movement of the bone.

The only animating ive done is in milkshape.
I wouldnt even suggest using anim8ors animation (ironic huh). As it is only useful for its local format and this can only be used in avi renders.
You need to get a program (Blender, Milkshape, Max) that can Rig and animate, then you have to export to Direct X.

But for now, just work on static objects or even characters in a neutral pose, and then later you can import them into another program to rig/animate when youre ready

i still dont animate usually until all my programing is done and most of the modeling and texturing.

heh i know its alot, but im just givin you some pre-knowledge.

Heh, thanks, yeah it's just modeling at this point.

I have been busy trying to get a basic shape for a helicopter (i just wanted to do something and thats what poped into my mind).

Its really basic and not too much stuff is going on right now, but i like it already. WIP.
