I just ordered DB, I don't have it in yet, but i do have experience in programming. I know visual basic, and C++ Pretty well. i also know Pascal

Will this knowledge help me and make it easier to learn DB.

Also about how long does it usually take before I will find my self acctually making games.

Just curious

Thanks in Advance

Knowing any kind of programming language will make it easier to learn another one, for the simple reason that you will know all of the fundamentals.

How long it will take for you to make games is entirely up to you, if you have no games programming experience it might take a while, and you will first have to get used to the general feel of DarkBASIC, but games such as Pong or Space Invaders are by no means games that you have to be a pro for to make.
Professional-like commercial games is another story, most people here after a long period of experience still dont make it to this stage, but with the right amount of determination and effort nothing is impossible

Cheers,
Kentaree

I would be unstoppable if I could just get started...

if you already know C++ then just leverage direct x api against C++ and don't bother with dbc/p. The fact that you even asked the question leads me to believe that you know very little about C++ and VB, but I may be wrong-if so I apologise. Either way, the hardest part of DBC/P is learning to not remember everything you knew about OOP and good programming practices (For the most part). It is an undertaking in and of itself, chock full of quirks and idosyncracies that some would prefer not to have to play around with. But then again it allows DX-morons like me program in DX without knowing any C-Based lang or DX at all.

Sorry, I probably wasn't too clear when I worded my Post. When I said that I know Visual Basic and C++ Pretty well I just ment that I took classes on them and Learn all the basics, and I can write simple programs in them to do what I want. I was just curious if this knowledge would assist me in making it a bit easier to lean DB cause i've found that once you learn one Language it makes it a lot easier to learn others since you already know most the basics and its pretty much the same like if statements and loop and arrays.

Any way sorry about the confusion.

I must compliment the people on these board for being so cool and nice, Ive been on other gameing related boards and when you ask a question people are so rude.

Thanks

Yes...any programming experience will help.

The ones who struggle are those who think DB is about dragging and dropping characters into a space and expecting them to fight, race or blow the hell out of each other.

...and we're all nice round here (oh, except for the disillusioned ones who think DB is about dragging...)

Gowmars,

As batvink says, your knowledge of a prior language will help for the reasons you and he suggested. Good luck with your endeavor into DB. I would suggest you get Pro not Classic, IMHO.

An OOP Side-note: DBP supports User Defined Types (Like VB6 UDT's), or like a structure in VB.NET & C++. Since you are coming from a OOPL like C++ you'll want to make quick use of UDT's in your programming as to keep the OOP habits somewhat in the forefront of your mind. And be on the lookout for variable mispellings as they are hard to track because the IDE/DBP doesn't require variables to be declared explicitly.
