I think that FFVII is very much a role playing game. You play the role of a character who is wrapped in a very involved story-line. Yes, it is very linear in many ways, but that doesn't necessarily make it bad. A lot of people prefer to have a lot of freedom when they game, but they aren't the only type of players, and they certainly aren't the only type of computer role players.

I can understand that FFVII isn't a game tht everyone can enjoy, but it is a well crafted game. Games are defined, primarily, by their limitations. Given absolute freedom something ceases to be a game.

Let me explain, Morrowind gives you thousands of choices for everything, but it is still defined by its limitations. For example, in Morrowind, you can't kill the hardest creatures in the game the moment you get off the boat. You might WANT to do that, but you can't, first you have to level up, aquire more powerful equipment, and track the beasties down. These are all limitations. The limitations placed on FFVII are just more severe, you can only have certain characters in your party, and there are less paths to choose from.

Chess is one of the most limiting games I know. It has been around for ages, and is still enjoyed by people all over the world. Your pieces are severely limited in their movements, and that's what makes it a game, that's what makes it strategic.

So in that sense, FFVII is a game in which you play the role of a fantasy character. Hard to say that it isn't a Role Playing Game, then.

I've played Every Final Fantasy Game from The originals to the bonuses like Legends. And suffice to say, in my opinion, they were all crap-EXCEPT 7. In my opinion 7 was one of the greatest RPG's Ever Made. And Let's Remember what RPG stands for: Role Playing Game. Emphasis on Role Play. so this "Playable Movie" stuff is total bull. You play a character and follow a script. Like just about every other game out there.Final Fantasy 7 was the first FF game I played, so i tracked down the rest. Nothing matched up to it. (BTW, if u liked FF7, My advice to you is get a Chrono Trigger ROM...another squaresoft game that has the same level of playability as 7 did.) Well, now i'm finished sticking up for what i believe in, i'm off for a cup of tea. Anyone fancy a cuppa?

'So in that sense, FFVII is a game in which you play the role of a fantasy character. Hard to say that it isn't a Role Playing Game, then.'

In every single kind of game there is, you play a role. But phrases aren't defined by the literal meaning of their seperate words.

'Chess is one of the most limiting games I know.'

Two sides can win, any amount of lossess can be taken, virtually infinite games can be had. Final Fantasy is always the same-- same group wins, no variations, the same characters die, etc.

This might help...
Difference between adventure and RPG: One is real time, one isnt. I heard somewhere that the main part of an RPG is the story and something...Ahh i dont know

Ah, but in Final Fantasy, each battle has its own outcome, and in each battle either side could potentially win. You choose your equipment and party based on strategies to defeat the computer. Yes, the story stays the same every time you play, but the story in chess stays the same as well, it is the moves that change. The basic story in chess is "White vs. Black" (or one side vs. the other), and that never changes, either.

Even the experience of reading a BOOK isn't always the same, as each time you read it you will be in a slightly different mind-set than the last time. Each time you read the book you will come away knowing more than you did the time before. I hardly think that you can justify the statement "Final Fantasy is always the same" when even if you were to record every action you performed the first time you played and then feed that back into the playstation for a second run, you would get different battles, items, etc.

The truth is that the freedom in Final Fantasy simply isn't a brand of freedom you enjoy. That doesn't mean that it doesn't exist.

Mouse, I could tell you what I've read about the multiple endings in FF7, but you really wouldn't listen, and you'd call me a "fanboy" and tell me that I just can't get over the game or some BS like that.

By the way, there are multiple ways to do tons of sidequests - even in Midgar, everything you say affects further gameplay. I.e., will you decide to go after Aeris or Tifa? Doesn't seem like much, but that's one of the many things. Also, what you say when you're trying to get out of sector 7(i believe it's sector 7), what you say can affect how the don reacts in different ways.

BTW those screenshots look friggin' awesome!

Blasphemy, how can you call FFVI (FF3 outside of Japan) crap, it's even better than 7, I think even Mouse would agree that 6 is one impressive game.

Ummm... no. And I truly do have a right to say that. A 'friend' of mine worshipped it and basically made me sit through watching him play it from beginning to end.

It might have been a decent game if the plot hadn't been anime-ized... the anime art style generally seems to go with a very childish delivery of everything. And by that, I mean; overacted, overemphisized, over-the-top... it's like there's no such thing as subtly, or vague foreshadowing, in the world of anime. Tch tch.

It's all opinion. There is no right or wrong. You don't like FF7? Cool with me...I don't like FF9, but that doesn't mean it was a bad game.

i didn't play 8, but i watched my friend play it all the time and personally it seemed pretty good. 7 is still my favorite, i played 9 and frankly i thought the story sucked. Zidane's struggle seemed so...miniscule in comparison to squall's and cloud's. also, the whole story of garnet seemed unoriginal.

JUST my opinion though

Downloaded the video and all you people with dialups aren't really missing anything. It's basically some character animations and the quality isn't any better than the prerendered movies in the Final Fantasy games.

For me, I never finished FF7, the characters just never appealed to me (don't know why). I absolutely loved FF8. I just started playing FF9 again (never finished it) and I think HZence is right, it just doesn't seem "epic" enough. I started playing FFX but found it to be a complete waste of time. I really hope they develop better characterization in future titles because I'm a little tired of playing the "I don't need help or friends" socially inept loner characters.

Thats backwards to most people i know, personally I think the 7 characters are great!

Dont know how much of 7 you played but cloud is only like that at the very very start... unlike Squall, who remains that annoying way until nearer the end...

yup all japanese advertising is usually an attempt to advert in the smallest space possible, hense crowded but also more eye catching than everyone else, hense gaurdy.
don't knock it, it certainly does the trick

as for it being real, it was developed by Square Films ... majoritively the same crew that made 'The Spirit Within' - but this time they worked closer with the japanese team and based it primarily on FF7

its not FF7-2 like FFX-2 its a film based on FF7, would be good to make sure thats perfectly clear else people will expect the exact same storyline

Yeah, a sequal film set two years after the evens of 7, with a different storyline, and I'd be suprised to see most of the old cast show up...
