In another thread I made I asked what the best game engine was and most of the responses where "make your own one it will be better" sort of answer, is there any tutorials for game engines?

(for people that say I should use the search button, I have used it, it comes up with nothing )

You first have to define what you consider to be a "Game Engine".

Some are of the belief that DBPro is a Game Engine, while others believe it is just a tool, and that the Game Engine is what you make into your game. Many games, whether the developer leaves them in or not, have an editor built into them, making them more of an engine of sorts.

FPSC would be considered a Game Engine by most.

Once you have defined that for us, then your question will be easier to answer.

Well the game engine I have in mind is where you:
-Create Models/Levels in external programs and import it into this program
-You define all the stats of the player/enemys/level and anything else

I hope that answers your question?

Really thats a world editor, a game engine is the code your game runs on.
Its not too hard to do, but it takes alot of time and id say you have to think outside the box.
EG for importing .x files you could just have a button that locates the file on your harddrive (browse window), then read the directory for the loadobject command.

I'd say that if your project could be easily used for other games, then it's an engine - an example might be a game that has a level editor, scripting, and the additional aspects should be taken care of - like collision detection, media handling etc etc.

DBPro is not specifically a game engine, because you still have a lot of work to do, fast tracking is only really possible with simple projects or by using other peoples systems, plugins etc. It's really more like having the graphics and sound engine ready to go, that doesn't quite add up to a game engine - I mean nobody would call OpenGL and OpenAL together a game engine, those like DX, are libraries.

@Lee Stevens

Not tying to be rude here my friend but, making a game engine takes alot of practice of coding. You will never make a engine with a tutt unless you are the one writing it.A good game engine takes years of practice as im learning myself. Im writing a said engine right now and still do not have all the ends worked out for my game yet.like fpsc, it was not fpsc in the begining, it was just an editor that ran games with little to no support for anything. but years later with added on code and many many updates it became what it is. so yes you could write a game engine, but not with any one tutt. the best thing for you to do is buy Hands On DarkBASIC Pro, I heard it has the simple break down of writing code for game engins, not that it teaches how to write a game engine becouse im shure it does not but its a good start.

my signature keeps being erased by a mod So this is my new signature.

This is really the wrong question. What you should be focusing on is the feature requirements of your project. Once you've an idea of what your writing, then work towards building it. Attempting to create a generic "it does everything" engine is a complete waste of time.

Hands On DBPro is definitely a good resource for learning DBPRo programming and I would recommend it.

I would also recommend that you forget the idea about creating a game engine (at this point, anyway). You have made multiple requests for tutorials and have created threads stating that you are confused about some things in addition to needing basic skills. As Daniel Wright 2311 stated, you need to develop some serious programming skills before even attempting to write a game engine.

So many games to code.......so little time.
