How many times have you had a great game idea, only to have it turn up in some other game later on? And of course, nobody believes that you thought of it first...

-Playing Age of Empires I had the idea that gates in walls would be cool. I had them planned for my RTS (which had been coming along OK at the time) and then I encountered them in AoE2! Not a new idea anymore

-I had the idea for a magic chest that could transform combinations of items into powerful magic scrolls. Was going to put it in one of my games (never would have gotten finished anyways, but it was my idea). Then I see it in Diablo II. Rats

-Diablo II again; I had a system of gems that had varying magical powers, and they ranged from 'damaged' to 'grand'. Then I see the gem system in Diablo II. Someone in Blizzard is inside my head! Oh, except for the fact that I thought of these ideas after Diablo II was released, but before I played it...

Any stories from you guys ?

Yeah I thought...

Why not have a game where Invaders come down from space, and you blast them away whilst they disintegrate your shield!

Then I thought about a Gorilla who throws barrels at a guy dressed like a plumber!

Then it was..how about some shapes drop down, and you can revolve them to make lines which dissapear!

Huh I'm always too late!

well i recently sat down with mars and proposed my design for the Jedi mod we're starting up just for him to give me a link to download a game that had the exact same system.

you can't play all of the games in the world, obviously some ideas that seem novel to you maybe old hack in others.
at the end of the day as long as it benifits your game then really shouldn't matter if you knew about the idea before hand or not, or if it was even done before - your spin on the idea will always be slightly different usually because of coding skill.

as long as the game doesn't end up a carbon-clone then really whats the harm?

My idea's are up in my head - nobody will be able to copy my game idea.
Most games that come out are mostly combat - so make something the opposite???

My game will make sure Final Fantasy will never be forgotten.
Remember me because my game will be in the shops in a year or 2.

I one time sent a game idea to Nintendo where you were a boy scout troop cleaning up litter on the side of the road. I was 7 at the time, and in boy scouts too, so I guess I know where my inspiration came from. But I had the levels and everything. They just said that my idea was just as good as the rest of the ideas sent to them

Hmm, I might just make that game one day...

I had the idea of a James Bond game where he would be targeted by his enemies. Then James Bond 007: Agent Under Fire came out.

I would be unstoppable if I could just get started...

There are probably 10 million people involved with videogames in some way or another worldwide. Therefore it is quite likely that two people will think of these things at once. AoE2 was in development for years, but the idea may have come to a developer half-way through AoE I, but it couldn't be implemented.

I thought about the Wikings in AOE and now AOM has them.

Not just game ideas get nicked but movie plots to. I had the idea for a remake of Tarantula, instead of one 50ft spider roaming the countryside how about thousands of 6 to 8 footers going on the rampage. Then a year later, Eight Legged Freaks came out. Somewhat inevitable realy.

Ah well, maybe I can sell Hollywood an idea like, A group of cloned dinosours go on a quest for a magical ring aided by Alan Quartermain and the invisable man, on the way through King Soloman's Mines they meet an old man with a light saber and do battle with Klingons.

Mind you, somebody in Hollywood has probably thought of it already

'as long as the game doesn't end up a carbon-clone then really whats the harm?'

None at all, I know that . I just thought it might be neat to discuss ideas that were later seen in other games.

'Most games that come out are mostly combat - so make something the opposite???'

I wasn't talking about people copying ideas, this is exactly the opposite... read my post again . And there are a great lot of games which don't revolve around combat, or don't have it at all... but there's a reason combat is so popular in games: people like it. It sells.

Easily Confused--

Just mix Episode 3 with LXG 2 and Dinosaur 2 and you've got your blockbuster ready to sell

I can only provide the truism from the writing scene: "Ideas are a dime a dozen. Everything's probably already been written, so don't worry about it."

What you have to do is to make the idea your own.

But then again, if everyone could stop remaking Vice City, or the other top games, and to their own games I'd be a happy man.

One time I clogged my toilet and this was a long time ago before we had plungers, so I called a plumber and he came right on over. A latin fella, fairly short, with red suspenders. He fixed my toilet up alright, and decided that it was so easy he didn't even charge me. I was all "whoa plumbers are awesome man!" and I thought of how cool it would be to make a game starring one. And I also thought hey, wouldn't it be cool that if when they ran into a mushroom it made them get taller? and I also thought wouldn't it be cool if there were turtles and some had spikes and this guy in a cloud that threw stuff at you and oh yeah a big boss turtle. Also pipes that some you could go down and others were just obstacles that were pointlessly placed.

Suddenly I hear of this Mario thing. Go figure. I think they did steal it from me except that my plumber wasn't italian, but oh well.

Yeah, I know, I only have one game. Yeah, I know it sucks. But I made it! Me!
