Took a little time out to look at bond's animated shader and came up with this.

Animated the scene and rendered the shadows and compiled these into a sprite for use with the shader.
All I really need for this is a simple atlas walk shader, I tried to create my own but there are artefact issues caused by timer when used in FPSC and I simply dont have the savvy to fix it so had to go with bond's. It really doesn't need the illumination or the diffuse with mask he uses and I did my best to lower the contrast and illumination settings,it got there to an extent but I cant seem to get the contrast down enough, so you can see there is a difference in the walls appearance.

Still its a nice effect and you get the idea.
To complete it all would be to create a sprite for the shadows on the fan blade which would animate as the blades rotated, I dont see any reason it wouldn't work, just dont have much time to do it right now.

Please excuse the choppy animation on the fan blades its down to crappy laptop and screen capture, it all plays smoothly in-game.

His planar shader should achieve this more easily now...

But the fact that he got this working and it looks great, is the thing that counts

i love how Rolfy envelops and developes things, i would love to have his skills at all of FPSC..

Not too sure...his planar shadow as I understand it projects onto floor only.
Actually most of the work in this is done in renderer and probably not feasible for most folks, but simply put if it was merely an animation shader and did not use all the other frills such as illumination etc, the performance hit is pretty low.
I have no idea if his new planar shader will work in this way, although the method I used above is simply on a wall I could easily have those dynamic shadows on all objects in the scene. So for me this kind of shader works best for environments where the player has a little more time to notice these things.

also, if you work hard, is possible with Decals right?

Decals are limited to 16 frames of animation and with the angles required for a complex scene its just not too convincing (you couldnt use decals on a curved surface), The above anim uses 64 frames for the sprite (altough the actual fan blades model uses 128, I could get away with half the frames for shadow as its a symmetrical object, in fact could probably have used 32 frames).
The animated shadows are actually part of the texture for this, Imagine a projected shadow onto bars or rails for instance they would all be perfect, on the bars and also on the floor behind remember this is animated not static.
Its not even calculated in real time.
As a point of reference there is NO lightmapping in the scene above all textures are baked.

Awesome. Amazing what can be done when one can do there own textures (and whatever baked means  ) and sprite animations. Just beautiful.

I reject your reality and substitute my own!

That's like setting up lights etc to cast shadows onto a model, then baking the resulting shadows/highlights onto the models own UV Map (it's texture)

Like making an Ambient Occlusion map (shadows/highlights) from a high poly version of a model (via MudBox etc) and then bake those onto the texture of a low poly version. this would then give the low poly model an appearance of being high poly.

Absolutely correct Nbt, I created a series of baked textures (as long as the model uses a properly uvw mapped single texture, it can be as complex a shape as you like) then rendered the sequence and used the baked textures to create the sprite.
This can be done for every model in a scene to create very dynamic looking environments, though as in all game development careful design and using only in noticable areas, it could have its uses without a huge performance hit.

Excellent use of the shader, just the kind of thing I love seeing. Adds so much richness visually. If you're having trouble wrangling your needs out of the original shader, hit me up with an email if you need something more specific.

Great job!

The only thing is that the shadow looks mistimed with the object. It almost looks like it's playing backwards...

A great job nevertheless.

Yeah, its mostly this comp and the lag from screen capture messing with the fan blades animation as I said in the first post, believe me it really does look fine in-game.

Ahh okay, It seems like a nice workaround. Shame things like this weren't around when I used FPSC.

I was just reading this months TGC newsletter and found a piece about the work Rolfy has been doing on this and it appears he's made a lot of progress since the ceiling fan effect.

Now he has a swinging ceiling light giving the effect of shadows being cast over the entire scene and it looks great. I've attached a small video to show this.

You can download the demo here.
http://newsfiles.thegamecreators.com/issue93/shadowroom.zip

Hopefully Rolfy will be able to shed a little more light on creating dramatic shadow effects like this.

Rolfy have you made or thought of making a skybox tutorial. What software do you use? Don't tell if it is a trade secret. Thank You Sorry wrong thread. all your stuff is so cool. I typed on the wrong one.

That's SWEET rolfy! Honestly, in both the screenshot and the video it looks as good and detailed as a rotating ceiling fan from Silent Hill 3 or 4!

Cheers, Jake
