Is there a way to compile a game in DBPro so that it does not require DirectX? My current project does not have any 3D stuff, and the 2D stuff if barely more than text.

I will be using this program at work with my students, but there are about 60 computers I'll have to install DirectX on if I can't compile-out the dependency.

DirectX is required even for drawing simple stuff like text since the most basic application DarkBASIC compiles to is a window with an empty Direct3D viewport/rendertarget/camera.

Think of it as a DirectX driven canvas or page which everything must be written or drawn on to.

So how is it I can run MS Office without DirectX? Are you saying because of the language, ANYTHING I make in DB is going to need DirectX?

Dbpro requires DX.. So anything you build in Dbpro / DB will also require DX.

Who says that you don't need directx to run MS Office? Even MS Office requires directx and a directx compatible graphics card. Most PC's already have a directx version installed, and the dll's needed to run applications like MS Office are most likely in there. It's just that DBPro requires other directx dll's that you don't find in certain directx versions.

Required for hardware acceleration. You can still run it without acceleration, and without DirectX. That is what I want to do with DBPro, but apparently I can't.

Use playbasic. It requires directx, but an older version that I have yet to find a computer that it didn't work with. And it's faster than dbp.

I would just do it. It shouldn't take more than 3 hours to install DirectX 9 on 60 computers. All you have to do is download it, put it on a flash drive, copy the file to each computer and click twice on it. Once it's done you won't have to do it ever again for any program you or any other teachers want to make with Darkbasic Pro.

Yep, that would be my advice too.

When I was teaching at Uni it was common practice to have to do that sort of thing for all sorts of software. If I recall correctly the process could be automated so the IT staff could do it for all machines, or for subsets of machines, on the network and I guess it could be the same with the necessary DirectX update. I'd speak to your IT staff and tell them what you need (and be prepared to do it manually, one machine at a time, as a last resort).

If you want to do the more fancy things in MS Office, then you'll need a Directx upgrade, or the required dll's for hardware acceleration. But you always need some directx dll's to work with windows or any other OS. Windows has already a minimum version of directx installed to communicate with your OS and your graphics card. You always need some kind of communication between your Operating System, and your graphics card. You won't see anything on your screen without it.
