I'm completely new to modeling and doing anything in 3D and I just picked up 3DS Max.

So I have a newbie question.

I'm having trouble adding textures that I put in the material editor to planes. When I try to add the texture to the plane, there is a no can do sign that pops up and won't allow me to add the texture. What do I do?

Thanks!

It would help to get a screenie of the problem, otherwise it might be of an invalid formath?

I couldn't get a picture of the 'no can do' sign when I took the screen shot.

The first button doesn't become active...is it because I'm selecting it wrong? I have the select button highlighted..when I select the plane, it becomes bigger for some reason...but the first button doesn't become active.

Hiya ^____^ did'nt know it was you, been busy these last few days so ive only just checked my email box. So your having problems with setting up your viewport references?

Well other than the way your currently doing, there is also the viewport background tool that lets you place a image in your viewport but does not let you select it. Its generally better doing this than planes since the image can be stretched out of proportion otherwise. I actually did this while i was working on cera and recorded it, the first few seconds show me loading up the image, then changing the image so it will match its own proportions and stay fixed to that spot. I also solarise the image so that i can see it easily when the im bulding the object.

I know your a new user here but the noob watch passes pretty quickly so dont worry about it.

As for what your trying, Henry highlighted the material apply nd show buttons. You first need to select the plane you want to show the reference on. I can see you'v already applied a diffuse so its a simple case of selecting the plane, pressing the button henry labeled as 1 to apply the material, then pressing the button marked 2 to show it on the object.

I'm not sure if I can post links on this site, so apologies if I'm not allowed.

But.... I've just produced a set of videos for Focal Press that might help you get started in specific areas... Max In Minutes

http://www.focalpress.com/eresourcecatalog.aspx?cat=784&id=930

They are short (10 to 20 mins long) and are designed to get you over the odd hurdle as you hit them as a beginner.

This is specifically the applying texture maps one...

Henry has given you most of the solution there though so good luck - PM me if you like if you need more help.
