i want to edit the default textures in my characters in photo shop . however i dontknow what a dds file is so can any one help me figure out how to edit them ?

Paint.net can open DDs files
You can open it with that then save it as a jpg

He said Photoshop. Just google photoshop dds plugin.

I know he meant photoshop, you can just use paint.net to convert it.

DDS is DirectDraw Surface and what DirectX likes to eat.

As the above posters have said there exist several tools to convert from DDS to a more editable format such as TGA, PNG, JPEG and BMP, e.t.c.

New PC Specifications : Intel Core i3 2.93Ghz. Windows Vista Ultimate. 4GB DDR3 RAM. ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT.

TGC Store Tag : Kasseyus (need to make a graphical sig one day)
