I think that's what it's called, correct? 'Sculpting'? Modeling real high-poly anatomies of humans and such? Anyways. I just started sculpting with a program called Sculptris. I started off with failure, a completely inaccurate human base (see here if you really want - the front: http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/7679/humanfront.png and the back: http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/9528/humanback.png [please ignore the head and legs, they weren't finished]), then moved onto less 'need-to-be-accurate' sculpts, like aliens and mutants.

Today I just finished the alien (don't have a name for it), and I'd say it turned out great. I even textured it, which was surprisingly fun and interesting.

Take a look:

Unshaded, texture only:

Normal map:

All I need is feedback before I can continue on to other things and start to fail less often

Thanks,

-PwP-

looks good. my suggestion for future models is to try to get more intricate detail. straighter lines ect. i like your alien it looks cool. but like i said i would aim at the drawing area of sculpting as its the most difficult part.

in my honest opinion:

It looks more like an organ then a head.

The top is too flat.

I like the overall style you tried to capture.

The two caters on the back-bottom of the head dont look too well.

Alright enough CC

I like it

looks like some badaz enemy character.

unless its a zombie, or has no intelligence at all with basic motor functions, then it needs a full head.

it would still need some basic anatomy, otherwise it will just look weird or "unrealistic"

mmoj its an alien not a human. it has a very predator feel to it.
it has a full head. you seem to disregard that this is something that came from his thoughts. the complete design is his. and if anything it only needs to be rounded out a little to make it less apparent.

Update - made the red parts less saturated to give him a more dull look:

Alright, I'll bump out the top a little and add eyes

Which ones? The ears? - http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/5042/ears.png Or even farther back? - http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/8930/farback.png

Yep. Probably won't make it into a full body even if I do reduce the polys.

@Azunaki, gotcha. So like a higher contrast between bumps and indents possibly?

Hehehe.... which are obviously quite odd

Thanks for the C&C guys. Working on a demon character meant to go into FPSC later on, but not liking it so far. Might post screens if I improve on it a little bit or remake it entirely.

EDIT: Heheh - take a peek if you aren't scared very easily.

EDIT 2: Started progress on a new alien, using people's crits:

for your first sculpting attempts you have some promising results, however i personally think that you're trying to do too much too soon, your first model was a complete human? honestly most people start with just a head, a hand or even a nose or an eye, start with human anatomy, don't start with aliens first, it'll just hold you back, once you get down your human anatomy move onto aliens and then start using the knowledge you've gained to have fun, now about polypainting, you acctually do want your polypaint to be a bit more vibrant than it should be, but just a bit that way its a lot easier to tweak and edit later and you'll have a much easier time of it when you come to photoshop touch up, also try to avoid just laying down an alpha and leaving it, an alpha should only really be used it you're trying to sculpt something unnatural e.g. metal details like screws, or if you are wanting a guide for further manual detailing with a brush, there are times when just an alpha will do but manual detailing is always more controllable and because of that often produces better results. keep at it, im liking the latest wip.

@Mazz, wow - thanks for all the advice. Sadly I got too frustrated with how much I failed with the first human attempt, so I started to just sculpt randomly and came up with the first alien Do you have any tips on modeling human anatomy (or do you have any reference sites that could be helpful)? I've checked out your ZBrush modeling thread, so I know you're pretty good at this Thanks for all your help

i take almost all of my references now from a priceless book called classic human antomy by Valerie L. Winslow, it shows not only the structure of the skeleton, muscles and flesh but also shows how the muscles work, how they a laid onto the skeleton and how they look when tensed and relaxed, its a must buy for not only anyone interested in sculpting but anyone interested in modelling.

heres a link to what i mean on amazon, its on sale right now

hope it helps
