I know it's really basic at the moment as I just did it for fun tonight but I was thinking I might make a game out of this. I'm thinking epic "Star Wars" style space battles...

Anyone have any ideas or possible media I could get my hands on? I don't have many space models

Nice!

I know there's not much there at the moment and lots of little things to add to the AI still as well as ship collision handling but it has the look and feel I'm after.

I get between 260 and 400 fps here...

500 - 600fps here.

Man... reminds me of what Battles looked like in X-Wing Alliance..

Best damn Star Wars combat sim I ever played! Sure could use another one like it...

That's very cool.

The fps dipped to 50 when all the shooting started (my computer's not all that powerful though, it's not that much better than a mid spec net book)

What kind of game were you thinking of?

I think it would make either a good first or third person dog fighting game or even a real time strategy game.

Adding in some larger ships (destroyers, carriers or cargo ships or even spacestations) would add some objectives, i.e. you could have missions to destroy or protect a particular ship or maybe having to get back to your carrier so the fleet can escape to hyperspace.

Nice work.

I'm thinking third person at the moment. Thanks for looking everyone and for your ideas!

Looks like the final battle scene from ROTJ, looking out the death star.

That Azul baronis looks just like the arcade game Sinistar which I played loads on the BBC Micro.

I just updated the demo in the first post. It has a "followcam" and if you hit "f" it will swap to follow another ship so you can get a look at how they're handling now!

I have added collision avoidance and although it seems a bit shaky with the camera it'll look fine from the player's perspective! Adding a player ship now...

Shouldn't this be in WIP?
I think it will fit better there.

Cool demo btw.

Sure, I'll start one as soon as I think of a name and plan it out a bit...

That's pretty good - I did feel a little motion sickness after watching it for 10 minutes though.

The overview camera was better for avoiding that... you can fly and shoot in the version I'm working on but I'm not sure if it's the direction I want it to take...

That's awesome! Well done.

750 to 800 fps, wish I could get that in my programs lol.

I am sure you were thinking to add some background scenery as/when you progress this, but the odd star/planet/nebula would dress it up a ton. Again not a criticism, as you just hadn't got to that point yet, I am sure!

Its good, but they dont fire enough.

Even if they are off target by some bit, i would be firing.

Its kind of like they have aimbot that doesnt account for movement.
If they aim at someone and the radius of the aim is within 20 pixels then attempt to fire.

Maybe its just me. Maybe that is what you coded.

Anyways, Looking good

[edit]
and if you want some models i will gladly help you.
Cant guarantee top notch quality though.

Yes of course, also the ships are placeholders.

I'm using 1000 active shots at any one time, I may be able to optimise this later and have a larger threshold on when they start firing. Thanks.

Thanks! I'd appreciate that. The game will need quite low poly models anyway though so quality is not the highest priority.

Here's what I'm thinking:
You are in control of a salvage ship and you go on missions to salvage old wrecked ships/mine asteroids/find resources. You can pilot the main ship "The Scavenger" which is effectively a battleship, or you can pilot a scout ship (fast with little protection), a shuttle (for diplomatic missions) or a fighter or even just jump in one of the guns on the battleship. I'm thinking it may even have a third person on-foot part where you can do missions on the wrecked ships/bases/etc.

OK, so I think I can call this a WIP soon but any further ideas here are welcome!

If a MOD wants to lock this thread that's fine by me! I'll delete the demo here as there's a new one HERE!!
