It was written in C (or possibly C++ but the coding style doesn't suggest this at all) using the Microsoft Visual C++ compiler.

And, in case you're wondering, C++ was most likely made in Assembler. And no, you can't get deeper than assembler, since it is already machine code.

C++'s just a language, the language itself wasn't 'made' in anything, its compilers were. And I'd imagine they were most likely programmed in C, and the compiler they used for that was possibly written in assembly.

Actually, there is one step lower. Assembler instructions are assembled into binary using Nasm, Tasm, GoAsm, Masm, Gasm, etc. In the distant past (heh) it was possible to program directly in machine code, by throwing switches on the front panel. On for one, and off for zero. And Radio Shack used to make a kit that illustrated this. I wonder if they still make it?

You make it using THIS

The "first PC" was probably something you can't even call a PC, something like a processing unit that reads in punch-cards and does something with them according to where the holes are located. Then some jackass noticed that you could use that to create a better PC, and then use that to create an even better PC, and you're caught in a never-ending loop of adding pieces to this PC until you get what you have in front of you right now.

Interesting post.. I've always wonder how a language can be "self compiling" ? Or maybe I misunderstand that term, I did just wake up.. Can't quite remember the context I saw it used in. I think something to do with porting a language from one instruction set to another, or just coming up with the language the very first time.. etc

I'm afraid everyone is wrong. DarkBASIC Professional was developed using goverment technology retrived from Area 51. If you type in the hidden command BEAM 1, "scotty" then a small weasle like creature appears on the screen and challanges you to a game of chess. If you lose this game of chess, it will not give you the receipe for KFC chicken (also based on alien technology). But it will give you a burnt out match stick, to explain that fire was also based on alien technology.

Basically... computers were hand-assembled, and then people designed systems to program computers with punch cards, and I think from there, programs created compilers, and programs (using stuff like CNC soldering) created computers. (err, emphasis on "I think". The only reason I say that is because all modern computers are created mostly by machine, because people just can't work that small)

I kept loosing until I decided to write an unbeatable chess algorithm. I learned the secrets of the universe but when he found out I cheated the weasel took away the knowledge using a teaspoon and some axle-grease.

In the process he may have damaged some of myiohun g eroiw lweii but I'm not sure...

I'm sure there was chicken in the recipe though
