Evedentally, according to the DX9 SDK docs, D3DXCreateTextureFromFile and D3DXCreateTextureFromFileEx (which is likely what DBPro uses) can read .bmp, .dib, .dds, .jpg, .png and .tga.
According to the DX7 docs (can't find my DX8 docs at the moment) those functions can only load .bmp, .dib and .tga.
Nice!
I'll have to look in the DX8 SDK docs to verify that the list of supported formats really did change between DX8 and DX9. This is a great "new" feature that will save people a LOT of time futzing around with converting texture files and possibly hand-editing their .X files!
It should be documented in the appropriate places in the DBPro help system!
