3D Studio Max has huge price tag. However there is a cheap way to get a hold of the software legally. If you go down to a huge bookshop, it's gonna have a computer section. (Try Waterstones or Borders, if ur in the UK) In the section look for books on 3D Studio Max. Many of these books have a version of 3D Studio Max with them, completely legal. (The program can be slightly edited however) So this means you get a full version of 3DS Max, with a giant book on how to use it, all for-and this is the best part-around £70. What do ya think?

Our nearest Borders Sells 3DS Max 5 Books for £75. It also sells books for another moddeling program, firesomethingorother. Anyway, none of the books were over £100. I'm sure of that. And there was definately at least 1 3DS Max book with a CD.


But then Again i could be wrong.

Most of them have CDs. None of them will have the full version of 3DS Max 5 (or above) on.

Simple logic dictates this. Why build a thousand dollar package and give it away for free on a hundred dollar book?

Yeah, I think you'll find the CD's in those books contain models and textures to follow the lessons inside the book.

Like i said, on most of the CD's its edited a little. But some of them do have 3DS Max. Maybe there's limits on the software or something, you're right, it doesn't make sense. Why the huge price tag? But these things are badly commercialised and you can probably get a version for a whole lot cheaper than what they charge. for example : i bought DBP on amazon.com for £40. There could be an education version of 3DS Max with less features, or perhaps these one don't give you a publishing liscence. I'm not sure. But Me and my pal Andy were in Borders, they have 6 or 7 bookcases of Computer stuff, and there was definately one 3DS Max book that came with 3DS Max Software.

I just had a look on Barnes and Noble. Didn't come up with anything-all the books were cheaper, i think £30 is roughly $50. It was last time i checked anyway. So those books are all roughly £28 i guess. The books i was looking at were around £70-£80. Hmm.


Damn. Now i can't find any 3DS Max Book that costs over £50.

get a good solicitor or lawyer or better yet a barrister if u want to go fight your illegal use of a students copy for commercial usage.

Check out gMax instead, its free, is a subset of 3D Studio Max, and oriented towards games design. Its on Discreet's web site.

Perhaps you could point out the relevent parts, I can't see anything that prevents you from useing content produced with gmax in a commercial product or even from selling content produced with gmax.

Gmax is not very usefull for use with dbpro.

I guess i was wrong about the books. You should probably just ignore this post. I think Quoth the Raven was right about the 30 day trial thing.

I don't understand how people can be expected to pay so much for software like that. I mean, you can get programs that can rival the quality of it for much less. For anyone who read this hoping to get cheap modelling tools, just look for the following:

Caligari Truespace 3
Milkshape
Wings 3D (open source)

There's also Amabillis' 3D Canvas Pro but the demo isn't upto much if you want to make some models. I'd point you towards wings, it seems to me to be the most powerful for free. Truespace is good but confusing to use.

Another one's Anim8or. I downloaded it, it's a bit more user friendly than the others but still pretty strong.

That's all. I hope i didn't get too many peoples hopes up. Next time i'll tink before posting instead of making a fool of myself.
