Hi, well I've been a long time user of Fps Creator for about three years and I kind of feel like I'm ready to give up. I've seen adverts for these amazing game masterpieces for example Halo Reach, Gears Of War 2, Fallout New Vegas etc., just games of the top of my head by the way. And I'm starting to think that maybe there just aren't any shortcuts.
For years I've thought about learning j2me, symbian, c++ or even darkbasic programming, but I don't know, I'm only 20 and there seems to be a minefield of different options, and my laptops pretty rubbish anyway, 2gb ram, inte 965 chipset, windows 7 home premium, so yeah even fps creator x10 is out of the question. I guess I just want to learn how some of these amazing, console and mobile phone games are developed.
So finally, where would be the best start, because I'm tired of wasting my free time. Should I just learn Darkbasic or try C++ or Java, I'm so confused. Wouldn't normally ask a forum, but don't know who else to ask lol. Any advice? Thanks.

well i think you should start with darkbasic pro and the the normal basic language and then C++ and maybe JAVA as an extra thing. this sounds very simple to me to do this in this way. but that just me. and i am only 14 years old.

Darkbasic pro = very simple

The normal basic language = simple

C++ = hard to learn

JAVA = i dont know

i hope this will help you

CHEERS.

wrong.

Quote: "JAVA ="
A pain if you don't know anything about object-oriented programming

Quote: "C++"

Far too broad for a beginner.

In the end it depends.If you want to make simple games for windows and don't fiddle with libraries much and get sort of a boost,go for DBPro.

If you want to work as a programmer,start C++.

Read a few books on programming essentials , experiment with a couple of languages and then see what suits your needs.

C# is not out of the question for apps.

I know this'll cause a flame war but I'm posting it anyway...

Personally, (personally!), I got bored of FPSC's limitations after roughly two and a half years. I then moved onto UDK, te very same engine used Gears of War, Bioshock, etc. Now don't think you're actually gunna make those games - but there's some pretty promising looking projects, and alot of them are hunting for modellors, mappers, etc...

However your laptop simply won't cut it - sorry. You need a pretty good setup to run it, roughly equal to the setup you'd need to run GoW 2 on PC anyway. I can only just about run it, and I have 4.5 Gb RAM, Dual-Core 2.5 Mghz processor, and an ATI HD2400...

I'm upgrading the Graphics card and maybe the RAM at Christmas. But if you want to make a high-detail game, you'll need a high-end system...

Also have a look at Unity if you can't get UDK. I've heard it's not bad to use.

Obviously not everyone...I say different lol.
I hate generalisations.And judging by what you say,you haven't used it before.
No language is simple.It requires a lot of time , effort and thinking to master it.Learning how to set variables and constants and go through conditions isn't 'knowing' a language.Trust me , you may think you know it after just reading the manuals and say it's easy,but when it comes to putting it to practice you'll get a lot of headaches.There's always this little error/thing you can't figure out how to achieve.

I will say this though,DBPro is easier than most other languages (Java and C++ in this case).

People can only say how things are simple for them for example I think html is simple, but that's because I use it a lot, I've very rarely used DBP so for me that would be hard.

The only way is to check out the languages yourself, have a go with each of them for at least a couple of months (you can't learn it all in a week!) and see what you think.

Yeh I went through FPSC to DBP to DGDK, then gave Unity a go before settling on UDK...

Unity 3 does look really good actually. I've downloaded the free trial but not played with it much yet.

Its easy to underestimate what can be achieved in FPSC though. V117 is a hugh step up from what we've had in the past.

From some who started in the early days of cryptic programming you should at least run thru DB and a few tutorials. After, that you will have a lot moresolid understanding of how things work with languages. I am going thru this with my son who thinks that basic is used to create old ATARI combat games only. So in my opinion, you should have a basic understanding first,if your gonna make a career out of it then go the C route.

Totally agree. My Step Dad has made programs for some big name firms, and he started out back in the Specci/Dragon/Amiga days, and he always told me learning basic is a great stepping stone.

@Nickydude: I think HTML is simple too, lol

Anywho, I'm not one for going against FPSC, I think it has far too much untapped potential to not be taken seriously. Though if I have to suggest a language, you can never go wrong with C++ and it's definitely worth learning no matter how "hard" or "easy" it may be

C# or C++ but dont go into things like dbpro... or any engine actually... you will not be able to produce halo reach on your own... You need to specialize in a specific thing ... then join a team...
