I have a high resolution spherical map texture that has been divided into smaller square maps. What is the best way to map this onto a sphere?

Thanks,

Why not just texture the sphere with the spherical map?

I know I'm not being specific. I apologize. Here is the situation. I downloaded hires 1024x1024 color maps of mars. There are 64 of these maps. When pieced together make a complete spherical map, but as you can imagine the map would be ridiculously enormous.

...or have different resolution/sized images you can texture the object with as you get closer to it?

Another option is to manually make your sphere and texture it face by face in your 3D editor.

How is the sphere going to be viewed? Is it a space game, a flight sim? It might help narrow down the best solution...

Do you need this much detail? 64*1024*1024 is a lot of memory that will be consumed just by some background skysphere... It might be easier to combine several images into one 1024*1024 image (like 6 1024*1024 images) and you might not even notice much difference in quality.
