I have a game i'm currently working on, and have noticed something strange...
i've set the fps to 0, and when i run the game normally, it runs about 40-50 fps which is ok but not too great. then, if i open windows media player, play a song and execute the game again while the music is playing, the fps goes up to 180!!!
if i close media player then and run the game again, the fps drops down to 40-50 again...strange
does this happen to anybody else?

And you are sure its no mistake in calculating the fps?
Maybe it goes up to 320 if you run your Media Player plus an Mpeg via Winamp in the background?
3D-Programs do not usualy run faster if there are additional tasks running, eh? Especially a media player that grabs stuff from the HD and displays it via the same display...

It's quite possible that the external program is simply screwing the FPS report up.

I experienced the same speed increase in visual object movements when having an audio file (mid, wav) playing in the background of the game - with the fps set at 0. if I remember correctly, setting the fps to something like 100, instead of zero, gets the 3d objects to move at a constant speed (as fast as they can unless some other code limit is set) regardless if the audio was looping or not.

There is something about fast computers, networking, DirectX, Media Player, and XP.

There is a bug in Motocross Madness 2 that only shows up on fast computers running XP and playing on the zone. It's like the game has lost track of the proper timings. There is no fix for it, but for some strange reason it doesn't happen if Windows Media player is running in the background.

So this doesn't surprise me.

ok. one thing i'm not actually sure about is wether the game actually runs faster with media player open, or wether it runs at the same speed - it could be as mouse says that the program is just screwing up the fps readout.
i have windows xp professional if thats got anything to do with it...
it definitely is when media player is open - no doubt about that.
