Emerald

I have been working on this, off and on, since December 2009, but recently I have been working on it a lot. After watching these fourms for 2 years and not having anything to show for it, I finnaly have a game worthy of a WIP post.

Object of the Game:
The object of the game is to navigate your way through a path of obstacles to grab the emerald on the other side.

Features (will include):
-40+ Levels
-Custom Level Editor
-2 Players
-Weather/Enviorment System
-Unlocks

Current Features:
-Cars
-Boats
-Walls
-Bridges
-Abyss
-Level Editor
-Main Menu

Screenshots:

Updates:
Back again, currently overhauling the engine for a better performance. As for a demo... sorry your going to have to wait a while, I got to get back in the swing of things

Any comments or constructive criticsim would be appreciated

-Thanks

xD! I've never seen so many boats on 1 river and in such close proximity (all moving the same direction as well)

I suggest having something else in the river like Frogger does. e.g. Logs

i didn't find the file.

well, maybe something like "mediafire" will be better.

advice: you want users play your demo? don't let your file to be a treasure hunter donwloading issue!!

or maybe i'm totally dumb!!

edit: ok, i'm a dumb.

I know it's an awesome game! This was inspired by it... if you couldn't tell.

Yeah, I made that level to show that you can make what ever you want.

Of course these are just placeholder graphics so they all look the same, sooner or later I'm going to have different sizes and different speeds.

the game has some good points, but:

1) change the speed of the cars, i.e. 4 rows of cars, 4 different speed and different directions, and you need more different cars, maybe with one special car if you collide with it you will gain points.

2) the same for the boats, use alligators, boats, woods, but more images are needed.

3) the main char can be a mouse, a little girl/boy, a pink pig. i know the image you used is for testing.

4) walls idea is great. use also images of trees or bushes to block the way.

5) the target can be a different fruit or jewel, i.e. an apple for the first level, a cherry for the second, banana for the third and so on.

6) place some eye candy around your levels.

the game engine works very good.
make this change and it can be a top arcade game!!!

menu is clean and nice. good.

I actually have the different directions coded in the game, its just not implemented because of the level editor. I will fix that.

As for the different cars, these cars are placeholders, I will eventually change them into different cars. The gain points idea is a good idea, I don't know where I'd use points though...

Again, these are just some placeholder graphics.

Yeah, I'm going to make it a boy or girl, there is going to be a character selection.

Quote: "4) walls idea is great. use also images of trees or bushes to block the way."

Wow... I didn't thinks of trees, thanks for the ideas!

Quote: "5) the target can be a different fruit or jewel, i.e. an apple for the first level, a cherry for the second, banana for the third and so on."

Hmm... I don't know that can be a bit strange seeing as the title is 'Emerald', but I see what you mean. Maybe different colored emeralds?

Quote: "6) place some eye candy around your levels."

I had an idea of doing that, but never got around to designing a system for it.

Thanks for the compliments and suggestions.

eye candy:

a) every 50 cars one of the cars is a Batmobile/ghostbusters car/icecream lorry/etc.

b) if you complete 10 levels in a row without losing a live the target jewel changes in a naked woman when you're closeby.

c) after 20 times you are smashed from a car, the main char uses a wheelchair.

d) if you hit a tree for 15 times, a lot of birds fly out of the tree.

e) if rnd(10000)>9995 and i hit a car, an ambulance will carry out the main char.

and so on...

note: they are already if - then structure, just apply a separate procedure in your game's loop.

I see what you mean by giving it some candy, but I'm not sure if the tone I'm trying to give is completely comedy. Yes, it is more light-hearted, but I don't know... Its still a great suggestion though, it got me thinking.

Sorry for the long delay, but after many hours testing I'm finally ready to show off the update

Update:
Fix some issues with collision with the walls

Implemented an Abyss system. The platform moves back and forth while you try and get across

Implemented a Bridge system. If your on the bridge, cars go under you and can't fall off in the water or abyss.

As for a demo... no quite yet, The next big update will have it.

Looking good! Frogger is a classic! Adding new environments, and some unlocks, maybe different characters for the player can give a good unique twist to this game! Keep up the good work, looks great so far!

@Drillfoot: Thanks for the comment. I'm trying to do that exact thing, make it stand out from Frogger.

Update:

Upgraded the overall perfromance of the game

Added different directions and speeds for vehicles and river items

Didn't get to implement a switch system just yet... but I will get to it.

Quick Update:

After a long period of time I'm back. I had to deal with life and a new project I'm working on. But don't worry, I won't let this go away. I am currently redesigning the engine so it will have an even better overall performance.

As for the next demo... It won't be for a while, until I get everything working correctly and add new features you're going to have to wait...

Oh, a cool project. I loved to play Frogger when I was younger, and I bet I'd still have a good time playing it. As for your game, I haven't played the latest demo yet but will try to do that as soon as possible (which is probably wednesday). What I'm able to tell you right know is, that I really like the current color scheme, and having many different levels sounds like a good idea. What about "2 Players" - cooperative, competitive, or what? Both concepts might have some potential.
Good work.. probably I'm looking forward to testing it.

Great game!

Only things I see are:

When stepping on a moving object it might be better if it only "stuck" if he was more towards the middle of it. And try to make the randomness a bit smarter. Like make objects spawn in a graphed out way and in a better less random design.

The game looks good for where it is at though. Can't wait to play the polished version.
