Dark GDK / Sprites not drawing after setdisplaymode!

I want to draw some sprites to the screen in a 3D game, they draw fine when set display mode isn't used but I want to use it to set the screen to 1024 x 768 and 32 depth but then the sprites aren't drawing! Pasteimage doesn't work either!

What I do is:

Set up game - sync on etc.
setdisplaymode ( 1024, 768, 32 )

Load images
Load objects

Game loop - run around the terrain and whatnot

draw "GUI" with sprites

but sprites are not workinnng!

Never mind, I seem to have solved it, I was calling setdisplaymode after loading the images, if I call it before the problem seems to have gone away!
