I get a lot of my music from here:
http://incompetech.com/m/c/royalty-free/

The music is by Kevin McCleod and he is happy for you to use any of the music there for free. A small donation if you make any money might be nice though!

You could download Acid Xpress (or similar) for free and try and make your own music?

I'd be careful about pulling anything from a place like Modarchive. A lot of that stuff is from scene releases, or individual established artists and stuff like that.

I'm pretty sure a lot of them have enforceable copyrights.
Make sure you contact the composer for permission to use their work, or that the work you want to use is specifically noted as being in the Public Domain

Also you may find a lot of stuff like covers of original songs (usually a bunch in one as a "Megamix" or "mix") you may be subject to the original the copyright of the artist being covered.

I get all of my music from PacDV (http://www.pacdv.com/) and Freeplay Music (can't remember the link). They each have some great free royalty free music and sound effects.

Like baxslash said, http://incompetech.com/ has a wealth of free music. All you have to do is provide credit to the owner, and maybe donate a small amount. He has almost every genre of music up there, and I've found that website an awesome resource for audio.

just thought I'd add my comments about Acid. What a piece of crap. I've been bumbling thru it for the last three or four hours. Nothing works as it should. After trying to do a simple copy/paste from one track to another, now it won't even play the main track. And thats after a reboot, load the original track, and try to load it into Acid and play it. And this is from Sony. So surprised. And disappointed. Maybe I'm doing something wrong..I don't know what, but, just bad. Plain bad.

For those who prefer a more retro interface, as opposed to the newer stuff (Softsynth/Studio/Digital Audio Workstation) you could look into trackers.

They even have trackers for old consoles, like FamiTracker for the NES.

Renoise seems to be a popular tracker but its commercial. Still a bit cheaper than most DAW's like Cakewalk/Orion/FL Studio
