Hey!

I made a few models for FPSC in Milkshape and everything worked fine...its just that Milkshape crashes way too often and I simply don't get a decent character made with it. All I can do with it that looks good is basic furniture..

I know that that's not Milkshape's fault but mine No worries, I'm none of these guys that blames a modeling program for its own failure

Anyway! I saw Kravenwolfs Youtube Videos and it was quiet cool to see what he makes with Blender...

so: here are my questions:

1: Does Blender run stable or does it crash frequently?

2: Can I create UVMaps or do I need an external tool?

3: Can I export in .X format?

4: Can I export Animations?

5: Does it has any cool generators like for 3d font or terrain?

Thats all

Hey there, I've been using blender for a while now, though I've never used it to create models for fpsc. Here are the answers to your queries to the best of my knowledge.

1. Blender runs pretty stable, it only tends to crash when your poly count gets too high for you pc to handle (it should be noted that blender relies more on your processor and ram and less on your graphics card than other 3d applications)

2. You can create UV maps within blender and it also has a vertex paint mode allowing you to paint directly onto your model.

3+4. Yes you can export to .x format though I've never tried it. Yes you can export animations. I've attached an image showing all the different formats blender is capable of exporting to.

5. You can create 3d text from any font you have stored in your fonts folder. It does not have a terrain generator, but by combining blenders random vertex adjustments and very powerful mesh sculpting tools you can create good looking terrain maps very easily.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

1) i never had a crash so far, but i didn't test it on windows
2) yes
3) there are some directx exporters. i think there is even one in this forum
4) there are some nice tutorials:
http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=154558&b=24
5) you can make 3d texts, and you can create terrain from heightmaps

Quote: "1: Does Blender run stable or does it crash frequently?"

blender is very stable and I haven't even had a crash.

Quote: "2: Can I create UVMaps or do I need an external tool?"

You can create UV maps in Blender

Quote: "3: Can I export in .X format?"

Blender comes with a exporter for .x files, but it is best to get this one (http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=166987&b=3) and use it.

Quote: "4: Can I export Animations?"

animations from bone rigs to just moving meshes around can be exported.

Quote: "5: Does it has any cool generators like for 3d font or terrain?"

You can create text and convert it to a mesh and then make it 3D, but you can not change the font. The terrain is easy to create with just a few clicks.

of coarse the tutorials that I created provide insight on a few features that blender has.

you can change the font for 3d texts if you specified the right path.
then simply click "load"

i attached a screenshot (linux, so the font-path looks different in windows) for simplicity.
you get the settings if you click with LMB at the edge of the panel (file, add etc) and drag a bit down.
to save your settings just hit CTRL+u

sorry, my english isn't very good...
