I've been farting about with the particles commands, with great interest and was pleased with what I could do with them. The problem though is this. The ROTATE PARTICLES command obviously sets the emmisions direction of the partticles, but it also sets the up angle for the particle which when it falls, falls to the ground based on the particles direction and not the true down direction of the world. How do I set the direction of the emmision but ensure that all the particles still fall towards the Y axis of thw world axis? Would be greatly appreciated if anybody has an answer

Cheers.

I gather that this will require myself to implement a particles system manually then?

Does this not do the job? It seems to work in Particles example 1.

SET PARTICLE GRAVITY
This command will set the gravity of particles within the particles object. This controls the actual course of
the particle. A negative gravity value will actually pull the particle upwards at a rotation of 0,0,0. A high
positive gravity value will make the particle very heavy. The default is a gravity value of 5.

BatVink, I'll play with it but I think it only determines the general weight of the particles, and not it's actual direction of velocity. I may be going the wrong way about this anywayz because it's to be used for a thrusting effect on a ship but the more I thought about it, the effect of the particles object may not look right if I had the elements falling to the ground. I may just stick to using the method of having the gravity value negative so that the particles accelerate with a short life time. It looks better anywayz

Thanks for the reply

I played with particles in Jetpac2003 but then scrapped it for my own particle effect, If I remember rightly, the best I got was the particles firing straight down, it only really trailed because of the movement direction, I reckon we need to be able to point particle emissions to get propper use of them IMO . I'd like to use particles for a lot more than is possible right now, like machine gun fire etc.

Van B, yes, I agree. Don't get me wrong though, the particle system is generally pretty good. Just takes a while to get the desired effect considering a couple of restrictions.

Anyone know what effect particles have on performance?

Is there any tool that I can experiment with different particles effect parameters and get to see its immediate result? Maybe something like DBpro particles viewer/editor?

David89 made one when DBPro first came out - I don't know where it's uploaded though, perhaps look for one of his posts and track him down that way.
