I've seen him live...there is no way he will get it wrong. His official title is a Mentalist, quite appropriate for tonight!

The stuff he does where he picks people at random...he really does. But when it comes to the harder stuff, he picks a few people and analyses them to get the right one for the trick. He'll have a few people tonight, and pick one that he knows will give him the right signals. When I saw him, he was quite brutal about choosing the right person, he threw one woman off stage. And the quote of the evening was...

Quote: "You can heckle me all you like, but I'll have you wetting the bed for the rest of your life."

From what I've seen so far, it's all a big con and he's narrowing group down to a pre-selected person who's in the trick.

He's a good showman. Picked the guy who was so nervous he would conform to whatever Derren needed.

Did the long silence spook you

"Bullet" number 5 was obviously all part of the act, build up the tension and all that.

Obviously it is an illusion, but the bullet probably was real, and the trick was obviously practised many times before, but I think it needed an element of fear to work.

Didn't really watch it myslef, i thought it would be a waste of time, i mean a gun at derren's head *coughs* he would be scared like hell.
P.S this trick as been done before and it has been shown how it was done, it was clever though.
P.S if you dont live in the U.K and want david blain hit with eggs please say so please i wil do it for you

I don't belive this was fake, he genuinly looked terrified, and there'd be no point showing it with a time delay if it was faked... They were ready to blank the screen if it all went wrong.
This was an amazing stunt, and makes david blaine (and his super crap box trick) look pathetic... The UK magic scene I've just noticed is very cool at the moment with this darker style UK magicians... Blaine I just dont like when he does these stunts! Which reminds me, I still gotta go and bug him...

MMM, i guess you could be right, but i still dont think that this trick was real, i could be wrong, so like there was no prove that the bullet was fired.....was there
so how do you know it was real, if it wasn't real, why would daid blaine do street tricks if they were fake, which they are.

Well I think the fact that Darren Brown knew what word each person was going to say suggests that the whole group was involved in some way. I mean it's not possible to guess what word someone is thinking of.

i was pretty impressed, when he fired the blank and there was that long silence i started laughing though, hehe, then he did the last 2 really quick, that was cool. Much tenser than wondering if david blaine is gonna make the 44 days or whatever.

Why would you want to stay in a box 42 days anyway?

Also do you know that he has only water, yes well that could contain glucose meaning this could all be 1 sick trick he's playing on us.
What do you think? derren brown is pretty clever!!!

Its a lame trick, and a UK magician (dont know details of this) did it for longer, more like 70 days a while ago... That's why Blaine isn't impressing the UK lot, we've had and have more impressive stunts going on!

I saw him live, a lot of his tricks are about drawing you in to a make-believe world. Looking scared is part of the act, as was the long silence.

Quote: "Well I think the fact that Darren Brown knew what word each person was going to say suggests that the whole group was involved in some way. I mean it's not possible to guess what word someone is thinking of."

DB did mind tricks with the audience, he guessed my answers, I know I wasn't involved.

Quote: "he's just 'reading' people physchologically "

Yes, he is but that's only half of it. The other half is influencing the other person's decisions, and is probably more important than predicting what he will do.

In a nutshell, DB has a good talent for Mentality tricks. To add to that, he is a very good showman, and dresses the tricks up better than most other magicians. That combination makes the whole thing a damn good show.

It is perfectly possible, people give off a lot of signals although they may not be aware of it. Because of the way the mind works, it is also possible to "force" people. It isn't really telepathy, just looking at their body language, clothes etc.

Predicting words involves real telepathy. A face has only a certain number of expressions. One of the answers was 'Glass' No way can a face say 'Glass' He knew the answer, and made up a story to fit. He may have been speaking so loudly that the contestants could hear him speak. They wanted to be picked for the end contest, so they said the word that they could hear him saying. That is a theory, but still not a good one, I would say the word that I was thinking of anyway......I think.

Well Derren Brown's 'Mind Control' show just premiered here in Australia half an hour ago. I watched the first 5 minutes and recorded the rest because I have a couple things I need done before tommorrow.

The 'trick' I saw was that he held a card and then told the audience/viewers "Use your mind, blah, blah blah." all the while making shapes with his hands, first thing he made was a diamond several times, then after that he made a 3 with his fingers. He told us then to guess which card it was and low and behold it was the 3 of diamonds. Looks like he deals with the subconcious and leads the person to think what he wants and then of course 'guesses' it.

I was looking out for any shapes he made with his hands or what he said so I picked it up quite obviously, I'm not sure if the 3 of diamonds trick will work on everyone though.

Not really. Given context you can often guess it. People won't say "glass" with their faces, but the note of their voice.

For example, think of a number with 2 digits in it, both of which are even, and both are different. Just write down the first number which pops into your head, don't think about it.

@Exeat: Mind Control is a good show to watch, because he explains some of the techniques he uses. I think the Taxidermy trick is in the one you have taped, he explains the whole lot at the end of the show. It just goes to show he is not reading minds, rather feeding them with the information he wants back.

I didn't see the show, but nobody in this discussion has addressed the law and police issues. This is the UK, remember, where all handguns are outlawed. You can't even shoot anything but tiny calibre weapons on licsensed gun ranges anymore.

Did he address that in the show, or were we just to assume that the cops were like "oh, you're making a TV show?? oh, of course you can break the law and use a high calibre revolver on live TV!". Anybody? If he didn't address that issue and explain it, then it blatently wasn't a real gun.

With the taxidermy trick, he recorded the guys being "influenced" without them realising what was happening, then he did the trick, then played back what happened before the trick. No Bull, he recorded the answer before he did the trick.

He showed footage of a blank round destroying a bottle, to prove that at point blank range it would mush his brain.

A blank is empty. A blank is a casing, with gun powder, but no projectile part. It's like the sorta thing you'd stick in your cap-gun, but a little bit harder. A blank is basically the Mike Tyson of caps!

Yeah but I meant empty of gunpowder. I'm not biased, I just know that you can't tell what someone is thinking, and I know that you can't point a live round at your head based on your best guess at a strangers choice of chamber.

Nah, it was the one where he pick-pocketed a couple guys, played Rock/Paper/Scissors, guessed a pin number and made someone guess what a hidden painting was of, amongst other things.

Yeah, that's what I think he's doing though, he's physically telling people what to think. Or depending on the trick guessing what they're they're thinking by the look in their eyes and body language.
