I've been using the latest Synergy editor from digitalzenith, and it's expired. The "EditorNew" version of it that comes with DBPro has some problems and I like the digitalzenith version better. Any chance of a Synergy update or a way to get it to not expire?

Hmph. I tried to upload a graphic of the error, and the Apollo uploader says the 28k file is larger than 50 megabytes.

The new Editor in DBP is based on Synergy so I imagine the latest version of this editor 'is' Synergy essentially.

@baxslash - yah, they are both Synergy, but the earlier build worked better for me. Something weird with the tab vs space in the newest version, and sometimes my text cursor gets stuck on a phantom character position a few spaces over from where it really is.

Yes, I noticed that in an early version of the new DBPro editor but have not seen it since the U7.5 upgrade.

Though it's not exactly the best solution, I found that it works if you change the date back a while on your computer. Yay for being in November again!

I get the same problems as Rich with the latest editor.
So instead, I'm currently using "editorU73.exe". I sooo hope it doesn't "expire".

* I do remember that Lee said somewhere that he disabled the "tab" feature in the editor in which is why I get square shaped characters displayed in my code instead of proper tabbing. "Spacing" instead of "tabbing" feels so unnatural to me and that is the main reason why I don't use the latest editor.

Currently using Windows XP 32

It expired on me right in the middle of something important.
Luckily enough we had started building our own text editor and are only a few short programming hours away from finishing.

P.S. screen shot attached just to satisfy curiosity

That's probably why I don't have problems with the editor. I find tabbed code exceedingly irritating - you insert some text only to find that things either jump around or stay put in an unpredictable manner and you can't see whether they are tabs or spaces. What's wrong with spaces anyway?

Funny, I use tabbing at the moment and only ever find it unpredictable when I import someone elses code. I find it much quicker to make an easily readable program using tab. If I wanted to make it readable using space I'd wear my keyboard out using the current editor.

Yet again this is always down to personal preference. There's no right or wrong 'rule' except the one that works for you.

I try to use different editors and languages as often as I can to broaden my knowledge and reduce my limitations.

A great book I'd recommend (if you haven't already read it) for anyone interested in programming is "The Pragmatic Programmer" by Andrew Hunt and David Thomas. It's well worth every penny!

The new editor that ships with the latest versions of DBP is in fact a customised Synergy Editor. I haven't updated Synergy Editor for almost a year, so you are recommended to use the new DBP editor anyway as it will have more recent fixes and enhancements.

I do humbly apologize GG, I didn't mean to make it sound like I was belittling the 'spaces'. I agree with baxslash on the personal preference aspect of the situation also and should of noted that in hindsight when I posted. Please forgive me.

But yes, with new future projects I could just as easily start using the spaces way. It's just that our freedoms of choice keeps getting taken away when we don't stand up to it. Hopefully it will get fix'd in the next DBPro update for those of us that prefer tabbing. If not, we'll just have to live with it until whenever it gets fix'd. ... And I'm happy that this is not an issue for you, GG. That means we can expect the Advanced SSOA fullscreen effect file done sooner then later.

Not really. I just like to have an obvious indent which would mean putting three or even four spaces in for every indent. So instead of pressing Tab once I'd have to press space four times to get the same effect.

Unless there's an automatic indent feature I missed...
*prepares to feel stoopid*

I use auto-indenting on VS2008 but never even thought to look for it in the DBP editor. Don't know why. I guess it's another one of those ruts I should be looking out for!

Possibly.

If I type a for/next loop, for example, all I have to do is indent the first line - the editor does the rest. No need for frantic keyboard space pressing.

Yes true. Still it's four hits on the spacebar vs on hit on Tab. Not a lot of extra work for one instance but how many functions/if/while/next/select etc have you written in your life?

My wife is far more of a danger to my keyboard frankly (don't ask) but it all adds up.

I don't know what default editor you use, but the default editor I use when you press tab, it inserts X spaces. (You can tell it how many spaces to use)

That way, you can still indent your code with the tab key, and it still looks correct when importing someone else's code. (As tabs are automatically converted to spaces)

"Automatically indent line after new block" has COMPLETELY changed the layout of my code... permanently and I can't undo it!!!!!

I HATE IT!!!!!!!!!!!

Right. Does anyone know how I can get my old code layout back please? It's really changed my layout from having 4 space Tabs to this mess:

Yes.

The really great news is I worked out how to set it right again! All I had to do was go through all my code line by line and put my indenting back in... easy! Only another four or five hundred to go

Do you know you can select multiple lines and tab them all together? SHIFT-TAB takes the lines left again.

I tried the default (Synergyish) IDE and found it so full of bugs that it was unusable. I am amazed how many people are sticking with it.
The quick and easy solution to all the problems mentioned here is use a different IDE.

Codesurge is a good one or there is my personal favourite Indigo which balid is constantly updating and is an evolution of BlueIDE.
