There are loads of programs you can get for making animated objects (characters being objects).

Some of the stupidly expensive ones being things like Maya and 3DSMax and some of the cheaper ones being things like Milkshape or Gamespace.

There are free ones like Blender and Deled but they've got drawbacks in that, everyone seems to moan about Blender in one way or another and claims it's no good for actually modelling, and Deled was previously just a map editor and acquired some animation stuff recently so it probably isn't as good as some of the other ones.

What everyone seems to do (including myself) is just invest like $20 in getting Milkshape and use that because it's cheap, does everything you'd want and exports/imports lots of different formats.

But heck, I know there are loads of modelling programs out there, the last time I checked what was available was so long ago so the ones I saw up for sale might be free now or there may be new ones entirely. !

@Kamac as COwvox mention, 3Dmax or Maya could be a solution...I remember that there were a lite version for Maya... you could try as well with Caligary Truespace.Blender is...ehhh..I`m to lazy to start with it..

Cheers.

@Zeus, i checked google ( i already know that google finder thing )

@C0wbox, i already checked 3dsmax in friend's house, but it seems it cannot import .x models without plug-ins, and i dont want to pay for it so much .

Dark Basic had an excellent 3ds to x converter tool included with it. Panda is the addon for 3ds max .x export and it already supports obj as standard. Really though for free options, Blender is the best bet. Hard to use due to it's unique keyboard shortcuts and very un-windows like menu system. But if only using it as a tool to convert files it would be fairly easy to use I would imagine. Download it and watch/read some beginner tuts for it while it is downloading. Not sure about Truespace, another one I hate, but it is free.

I use both Maya and Blender. Blender is difficult only when you touch it for first time. Once you get familiar with it, I think, it is easier than Maya.

To convert virtually any file format into another, use LithUnwrap. It is really good.
