is there any 3D texturing program where you could just draw on the model instead of having to texturepolys independently?

Blender has something like that but its not very powerful. It will allow you to paint blend etc. But like henry said.

Mudbox does this, Zbrush has Polypaint, and what henry ham said.

Most are very expensive, inefficient and dont work out aswell as a standard uv map. I sure zbrush uses pixel grid if its not already unwraped aswell making it useless for the end user.

most times your going to want a uv map anyway for loy poly game stuff. Uv mapping isnt too hard once you get the hang of it and find out what works and what doesnt. a good image editor is pretty essential. Im a freebie type guy who uses Gimp and I think it works great.

Try Sculptris its free
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=90617

You can import .obj models in to Sculptris and sculpt details and paint on them.

As a noob like me, I think Sculptris is really neat. You can make the polygons as low as you want with your models( ie: you can select polygons to delete) and/or import them like JimB mentioned then paint on them. Works great and free.

I have a code snippet that will load in Sculptris saved .obj's into dbpro and build a 3d object from it here:

The new 3Ds max 2011 has a real time texture painting feature, but of course Zbursh, Mudbox, and Crazybump all do also.

I believe there is a program called Tattoo that does 3D painting. I have no idea where the owners site is, but downloads may be available on the net somewhere.

Tattoo 3D

To the Author of this post. Applications that allow you to paint directly on the model almost always require you to unwrap the model first, so if you don't know that then get learning it first.

Regarding Sculptris, I followed the development of it and helped with testing for a while, awesome piece of software and I often find myself working in it over ZBrush.
