Don't use a zombie story is my best recommendation.

I reject your stereotype of Wisconsin and, in fact, live in a city.

What he said.
Zombies are overused in the gaming industry. Especially with this engine. Every seccond game is a zombie/survival theme.

The reason zombies are the most popular are...

1. People like brains/gore.
2. The zombie characters are the best quality. Maybe we should start working on normal characters now. But, the new model pack 52 is awesome I must admit.

My suggest is the same as theirs, Just don't do it.
But, If you still want to do it then, heres a story....

Jack and Fiona are searching through a cave in the asian jungles.
Fiona walks towards a rock and picks up this rock.
The rock explodes into a toxic dust floating in the air.

Jack yells and run towards Fiona.
Her face is completely brutalized and theres blood dripping
from her mouth. The infection has begon.

All of the above would be in a movie animation then the game would began.

You can either have your character as a doctor or as some swat team member sent into to take out the infection that has spread throughout a town of 500 people.

You can brainstorm your own ideas from here on..

Hey if you like zombies, go for it. Just because everyone else is doing it doesn't matter. It just gives you incentive to do it better than everyone else.

Don't think too hard about some convoluted backstory. Most people get bored reading a huge setup story. Just throw the player into the game, drop some hints along the way, some desperate notes from other survivors, and eventually reveal why this is happening. Again, there are only so many ways to tell the tale of a zombie outbreak, you just want to keep the player interested enough to find the next piece of the puzzle, even if it is cliche.

An idea is to think outside the box...like 28 days later wasn't exactly a zombie movie but still had the same basis of a disease that made people kill each other and transferring the disease through blood.
