Roswell Racer is a mario kart/Crash team racing style kart game. ESC is doing all the programming and I am doing all the media.

Heres a screen shot with full aniso and AA. The game is at fullbirght at the moment (until vertex colro version of the track is loaded)

A close up of the kart

a lineup of all of the karts

This is a screen taken from max with some basic vertex color lightmapping.

Looks damn impressive.

I reckon it'd be cool if you could make some changes to each cart - they're all identical, which might get a little dull, if each cart had some minor vert editing to make each one unique it'd give each alien more personality. If you must use a single cart model, then I'd suggest you simplify it, make it more rugged and basic, more mass-produced if you know what I mean.

I was thinking about that the other day. Would be great if I had the time. I may do something like that.

more info:
Roswell Racer will feature 3 tracks (roswell day, roswell night, and area-51) along with 3 modes of play (race, boss, battle) and hopefully will feature multiplayer gameplay.

The roswell night track will be shader heavey and will only run on top end machines. Roswell night should feature some impressive effects (glows, headlamps...)

I just made a modified version. I may make one more but I think 2 will do it. I changed the read tires, larger scoop, and new exaust. Im thinking this will be the style for higher top speed less handling kart.

that looks really good, well done i have to agree with van though, if you can make the karts/characters more unique in some way it would make the game better, players would want to use different characters everytime they play 'cus each kart would have different handling, weapons (if included) etc thereby expanding the game-life keep up the good work!

Looks great. I can already hear the sound of other people ripping up designs for their compo entries. I was going to enter but my effort is going to look just plain stupid against entries such as this. Is it worth the hassle entering?

Not with that attitude!

Behave and get on with your entry, I mean how many people would have guessed 'Girls on the Block' would win the retro compo?

My game won't look 1/10th as good as that, but that won't stop me.

Must agree with you about 'Girls on the Block'. How that won is anyones guess. I guess I'll have a go. Thanks for restoring my faith!

I also forgot that a lot of people that previewed their retro games in this forum never actually entered because they gave up.

Also a good way for people like me to stop faffing around and actually finish a game!

Froggermon, looks nice, it's obviously had some time & talent spent on it.

But for Gods sake, ensure the keys are redefinable, I hate using the arrow keys.

STE, Keys will likely be redefinable (at the very least in a txt) also it will have gamepad/joystick support.

STE, the controls will be customizable, although hopefully I can make the default feel as comfortable as possible (even if it does use the arrow keys ). We will also add gamepad support if I can ever get my hands on one

Whoa. This looks like it's gonna kick ass! One small thing though - that fence is on the road. Shouldn't it be beside it?

I'd better get going with my game, I've still got 105% to do.

Adventure game for alienware comp (-5% complete: Yep, still going backwards)

@Mach
Roswell night will be built after roswell day is done.

@Kharnor
The fence is temporary, it will be smaller and conform to the road by the end.

I have also often been baffled by the judges decisions in these competitions. I remember that dude the snowman beat bear run which just didnt seem right.

Hahaha, I also thought that Beer Run should have won the winter competition, but of course I built it, so I'm a little biased...

Honestly, though, I thought that Dude the Snowman felt complete, but I had a lot of stuff yet to implement in Beer Run, and it showed. In that way Dude was much better, so I honestly can't say I was upset. This time around I'm trying my hardest to have a game that feels done for the competition, and although I'd love to win, I'll be perfectly happy to just get the game done!

There's a lot of work left to do, that's for certain, and with the way the entries are shaping up (especially this one!) it's going to be quite the battle!

Hi
Very nice looking game with a nice style to it - I'm going to have to work hard to compete against you !
One thing I notice, though is that you are running at 64 fps, which is pretty good, but your pc specs are:

P4 2.8C @ 3.03 with an 866mhz FSB:: MSI Neo-2LS running PAT:: 1gb Mushkin PC-3500 DDR High Perf level 2@ 2,2,2 :: ATI Radeon9800ProAIW :: 120Gb SeagateBarracuda 7,200RPM SATA HD :: Antec Plus1080AMG]

nice pc, but have you tested it on a..say more ordiinary pc and seen how it runs??

Keep up the good work!

Robin: Thanks for the positive feedback
The reason it's running at 64 fps is because it's capped there. Doesn't need to go any faster to look smooth. It would probably be running somewhere in the mid-hundreds otherwise

As compo rules state:

Quote: "The PC the entries will be run on is a Pentium 4 3.0 GHz, 512 MB RAM, Soundblaster Audigy, GeForceFX 5900 video card and DirectX 9.0b."

then I guess Froggermon and ESC_ probably don't care what it plays like on old slow pc's. I agree that there has to be a time that you have to not worry about people still running on slow 1Ghz pc's and running old os's like win98.

Well, we may still have multiple levels of detail, plus the ability to switch on and off the more cpu-intensive features (pixel shaders and particles)

Nope, I don't. However to be nice there will be some options to reduce polys and effects. We may compile a second download version with low res textures too (duplicates would inflate file size).

just two months to the deadline of alienware compo, i'm wondering if we have a surprise title win the pot.
We have only six games to watch screenshots here in the forum, but 100 are registered to the compo.... maybe is better to think how good will be the 94 we don't see....
Maybe the next week i post some screenshot of mine.
It's all ready to play, 8 levels complete and 3 to do.And i've two months to refine my game.
And it will be a open project with the source code, so all users can watch how it works.

the reason I'm not showing anything is becouse I don't know if I can finish it in time and I want to suprise everyone

It's always a surprise title that wins - not that Roswell Racer does'nt look good enough to win, but that's usually how things turn out.

I'm not posting screenshots, not even spending a lot of time on the forums these days, I had a major HD crash and had to install a new hard disk, so I have no time to spare if I'm gonna finish in time. The main reason I'm not posting screenies is because I'd spend too long worrying about peoples comments and get side-tracked, I reckon I should get the engine done then worry about tidying up media and textures.

Excellent stuff. Definately looking forward to playing this one, best of luck to you and ESC.

Shoot, I'm entering the compo, but if I were a judge I would vote for Roswell Racer! Those models are sweet indeed...

These competitions are amazing in the way that they get all of these developers and artists together to crank out game after game after game. I can't wait to play them all!

In my game, the aliens are on Mars and they are trying to protect themselves from the Earthlings who are trying to land and take over their planet. It's a strategy game.

Well, right now there's no wall collision (I'll either use sonic's collision .dll or intersect object), but all the road collision is simply using intersect object

Ya I used max5. Collisions will be on a seperate mesh and as ESC said we will use either sonics dll or intersect object.

The closing date is 31/12/03 though right? - so that's 2 months to go by my reckoning, stop trying to scare me!

Looking good guys, I hope you get those coloured vertices into your engine - I just added them to my terrain and it improves the look no end - with smooth normals, varying coloured verts, and shadow verts my terrain looks so much better.
If you can't get the vert lighting data from max, I suggest you make a vert lightmapper in DBPro instead, like project a line between the vert location and the light source and calculate the lighting based on collisions on the line. Also, I added a little colour effect, just changing the vert colours against a spectrum, like if you set the vert colours to be a random colour, like RGB(rnd(255),rnd(128),0) is good for sand - it's great for making your scenes look more natural, helps break up any repeating textures too.
