With a soundtracker program like ImpulseTracker or ScreamTracker. Have a search for those on Google.

I have no musical talent but found ScreamTracker very easy to use - it must be easy if I can get to grips with it

I like Modplug, it's nice and easy to use - although that does'nt mean I can actually use it . Put the effort in and learn all the features, otherwise tracker songs tend to sound samey, good samples are also key. You should find everything you need around modplug.

For those ultra cheesy dance tracks, bag yourself a Roland 909 sample set from here : http://machines.hyperreal.org/manufacturers/Roland/TR-909/samples/

I also heartily endorse mod plug tracker. it rules.

and it's free. that's a plus

once you get used to MPT, i'd advise (if you have money) to move to fruityloops. it's like a ... tracker gone mad! it has so bloody many features, and while it's a bit hard to figure out at first, once you get it, it's the shiz-NAT. i definitely plan on buying it. the cheapest version of it is only $50, but i'm going for the $150 because i love it so much and i like the features the $150 version offers..!

I recommend madtracker (www.madtracker.org)....I've used it to make loads of XMs for both commercial and non-commercial (ie demo) releases...YOu need to register it to exports from MT2 format to mp3, but to save XM's its free

Me an a mate have used fruityloops (3, the new v.4 is out now) for a while and find it to be the best, easiest to use package for creating music for beginners, and its also a brilliant tool for experts alike. Even a professional drummer who works with famous artists uses it, but i forget his name. Shane something.

It can export as mp3 and wav, and couple it with a program like acid and you can produce some pretty amazing, professional sounding music.

If you can find an old version have a go with it or find a trial.

the great thing about it is its realy accessable for beginners, but dig underneath the exterior and theres a ton of outstanding features that make it even better.

you download trail from there site. fruity loops is great. i been playing with it over a year now. and over that time they have made some nice improvments to it.
