Alright, you might have seen my other posts in the Dark Basic Discussion board, but then again, you might just hang out here, so this is the situation:

I have created (over half-way done) a 3d editor for Dark Basic that is user friendly and I think could be useful. However, from the responses to some of my other posts, no one seems to want it. I would like to know if anyone would be interested in it.
(Basicly, the program does everything that you would normally have to do with several commands in the editor, except it's got an easier interface.)

Please respond.

(P.S.:I would show some screenshots showing the interface and whatnot, but I can't get it to work. The site in the sticky doesn't seem to work. If someone could show me the address, I would gladly show a screenshot.)

The problems is (at least for me) that it is a very specific tool, which forces me to use several tools to do things that might be done with one tool ...

I think the DB community would benefit from an open source editor, I mean no editor is perfect for every engine - so a lot of people start from scratch everytime. Maybe you could make your editor open source, so people add the features they need, and it gets updated to the master version - eventually ending up with a feature rich editor that can do most of what people need.

Indeed, Van B is right; no editor is perfect for every engine. However, you don't even have to make it opensource if you support plugins. Don't know if that's possible with DB though.

Dreamflower:My program will not be a very specific tool, sorta kinda. It can animate, texture, rotate, scale, save, delete, etc...(or were you talking about something else?)

Van B: That's a great idea, but I wouldn't know how to do that, unless I just posted the source code. Wait! I think I might know how! Hmm... If I use your idea, then I'll give you credit!

JeroenNL: Err, you mean every game engine, or every computer engine? (Yes I realize that this might, and probably is, a stupid question)Please explain...

I feel that any tool that you, or anyone else might design to make designing games easier is a good idea. I am actually interested in your editor and look forward to using it.

Hey! It's good to finally get some positive feedback! I would post a screenshot, but I can't get the image thing to work right. Try this link and click on the different images to see screenshots from the editor, with the alien from the DB contest as the example model:

it seems to me like your editor cant actually edit vertexes/lines/faces. Just rotate, move, scale, etc. All this can be performed with code, so how would your editor be useful to a person with access to even the simplest of free modellers?

Err... well, you are right... but my program lets people see what they're doing, while they're doing it. Ever played around with Magic World? Kinda the same premise. You can also animate with my program.

So, like you pointed out, this program can do anything that you would want to do with code, except in a user friendly atmosphere. The hardcore programmer probably would rather just code, I know, but some people out there will enjoy my program enough to use it.

Oh yeah! It seems like some people are always having to export their model to another program, then to another, then save it as a .x file from there, so this would eliminate all that. Of course, this program isn't meant to replace 3d sculpting tools, just to... help with dark basic.

Sweet! I'll need an e-mail address. And it may be a while before I have a beta ready. I'm having a bit of trouble with the color command right now. Oh wait. Your e-mail address is right there!

*sigh* my streak of stupidity continues even more...

A good way to go is setup files, like you could let the user save the object scale, appearance etc as a setup file which is loaded with darkbasic code, this saves a lot of messing about - even hardcore coders like convenience .

I meant that every 3d engine has specific needs according to the way it works internally, and specifically the fileformat it works with. That means that you can't write an editor that works perfectly for every 3d engine out there. I do know that popular editors support a wide range of fileformats. But you can't just write functions (!) for every 3d engine out there. If you support plugins, you are allowing other programmers to write additional functions for your editor. They can, for example, write DLL files which hold the extra functionality. The DLL is then used by your editor. Something like that is going to be implemented by DeleD for sure. And, afaik, Milkshape supports plugins too. Because Milkshape supports lots of fileformats AND plugins, it's a very popular program.

I'm just starting to learn DBpro and it looks like I'm joining
a creative open community.this editor seems like it could be just the ticket for a begginer like myself.

keep up the good work and don't let the haters and doubters get to you.

if you want to send a beta I'll test it

Van B: Do you mean like how Magic World saves a file, then has a function to 'load' it into Dark Basic? B/c if that's what you meant, I've already done it. If it's not, then I don't follow you.

JeroenNL: Um... I still don't follow you. Perhaps you misunderstand my editor. It's not going to be a 3d sculpting program, just an editor for your Dark Basic objects. It will only support files that Dark Basic supports (.3ds and .x). Maybe that cleared things up? Or am I still on my making myself look stupid streak?

Perplexicle: Well thank you, but uh... I don't know if this will work with DBP (probably not), but if I ever get around to getting DBP, then I will definitely either rewrite the program for pro, or just edit what I have to include more functionality.

Thanks to all!

Ah, I now understand what you're trying to achieve. In that case, ignore my story. I just thought it was going to be some general 3d editor and if that was the case, I was suggesting a few technical methods to make it an editor that is interesting for large groups of people. Anyway, since its only for DB, ignore what I said.

And no, you're not making yourself look stupid. Anyone trying to make the world a better place by trying to be helpfull towards other people (which you do, by creating an editor for DB), can't ever make himself look stupid IMHO.

Actually, if you would look at some of my other posts, I have been on a streak to make myself look stupid. (not that I am, it just seems like I'm not picking up all the information from peoples questions or I'm asking stupid questions myself) Oh well. Thanks for clearing up your post. I was getting worried that I really was getting stupider!

Anyone have any suggestions? If you don't post, then I don't want to here from you saying: Why can't I do this... or why are the buttons configured this way... hmm... that's a good idea. Alright. As of now, here are the button controls:

<&> Rotate the active object or active limb around it's Z axis, depending on the mode

(Left and Right Arrows) Rotate the active object or limb around it's Y axis

5 (center of the keypad) Switch modes

Up and Down arrow keys:
Mode 1: Zoom in/out
Mode 2: Rotate active object around it's x axis
Mode 3: Rotate active limb around it's x axis

+ and - on the keypad:
Mode 1: Nothing
Mode 2: Inc, Dec which object is active
Mode 3: Inc, Dec which limb is active on the Active object

4, 6, 8,& 2, on keypad: Rotate camera left, right, up and down, respectively.

Mouse: Used to interface with the menu, which accomadates for the more complicated things like color, texture, scaling, loading, saving...

Any other suggestions?

Alright, I got a new screenshot, so I thought I'd try the image thing again. Here goes:

Just in case that doesn't work, here's the URL:

That was done in a matter of seconds with my program. What do you think?

Hey guys, umm... sorry if you misunderstood. The beta isn't ready yet. When I get a beta ready, I will send it to you. I keep on giving myself deadlines, then regretting that I said them right after I did it. Last deadline I gave was this Wednesday for the beta. I'm not positive if I can get a beta ready by then, but I'm gonna try. So lets see... need to add Underlord to the list...

Your free webhost won't let you directly link to the images because then people don't see the adverts.

Either find one of the few remaining free host that let you link to images or pay for hosting or link to a html page with the images on.

Hello. I'm a 12-year old PC freak and I just got the demo for DarkBasic Pro. I tried and now I have a headache (yes, this is my first time (DUH!)). Anyway, I was just wondering if this is supposed to happen.

Well PC Phreak, maybe you should start your OWN THREAD instead of taking space up in mine?

(sorry if I'm being rude... but, you are posting a message that has nothing to do with what's being talked about, and I find it very annoying. You should post in Newcomer's Corner. And make your own thread. Not in 3d chat in someone else's... )

Hmm... another tester... I'll e-mail you when the beta is ready, which, due to certain circumstances, may very well be a while.

To All, Regarding the "certain circumstances" : Well it appears I spend to much time on my computer than paying attention to studies. Not a bad thing, except that my grades have been less than what I would like them to be. Therefore, I will not post on this thread, nor any of my other threads, for a while. The time that I gain from not doing stuff on my computer will be spent on studying. Why the drastic change? Because my scholarship demands that I have good grades, and I demand that I have even better grades than my scholarship demands. My computer will be used only for checking e-mails and doing homework for a while. Sad, really, I know. But that's the way things work. I will return. I will check my posts. I hope that some of you will keep them active with new ideas for my program *looks in JessTicular's direction, with a pleading look on his face...* In any case, hope all goes well. Good luck, and all that jazz, and godspeed in your programming.
