String literals from functions?

To answer the hyperthreading question: minimal multi-core improvements from certain plugins .

Oh yeah, existing DBPro bug don't magically disappear unfortunately

Let me reword it - DBPro works just as well on Windows 7 64-bit as it does on any other Windows OS from XP onwards.

Ahh right I was under the impression it dosent affect XP, I use it all the time and I tested on Win7 64bit and it crashed. On XP Pro 32bit I have been using it for ages without problem. I have changed all my references now to future-proof

but that bug doesn't seem to be an issue on XP.

Correct, which to me is what makes the bug seem so critical.

There's always gonna be limits in the computational powers of computers. I'd say you're probably coding some inefficient stuff! Huge terrains and high-poly models take more processing power and rendering time. Things like BlitzTerrain use methods so that the computer doesn't have to process as much stuff. You don't think in Oblivion: The Elder Scrolls, they just too a giant map and plugged it in do you?

And newer processors are generally faster, whether they're single core or 16 cores, so odds are a newer one will be faster than whatever one you have now.

thanks nuero! yeah i think my code might not be all that good. i keep loading huge land meshes as the player moves outside & deleting ones that are far away. i dont think this is great code but im trying 2 make a game like oblivion & this is the only way i could come up with :/

i kind of adopted what beth did with morrowwind, using cells
i wish i could look at there code

Buy Blitzwerks Terrain, you won't be sorry for large LOD terrains.

Blitzwerks Terrain appears to be pretty good. I'm going to check that out as well when I need something like it in the not-so-distant future... not yet though, but it has already caught my eye.

If you don't want to spend any money a cell based technique will probably be the only way you can handle large terrains in an efficent manner yourself. You should probably experiment with smaller cells if you are having trouble with loading huge ones all the time.

As for the topic's question:
I use DBP on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 and didn't have any problems so far.
