i made a model and have it in the correct format, i just don't know how to create the texture. if this info is needed, i am using google sketchup 8. can anyone help?

don't use sketchup, its impossible to properly texture with it, use blender. Most powerful free app out there atm.

UV map your model, blender has great UV mapping tools, look up tutorials on www.blendercookie.com or something like that

Once you have your UV map, you can export it into photoshop or gimp, and use a combination of Ambient Occlusion, hand painting and image overlays to get your texture. Good luck

I wouldnt say Sketchup is IMPOSSIBLE to work with... I did use it fro my starting models after all, and IMO they didnt turn out too bad

well yes, but its impossible to work properly, this is gonna seem harsh or whatever, but the proper way to texture is to UV Map it manually, ensuring maximum texture space, and non-streched UVs. Sketchup does not have a UV feature, just an assign texture feature
