DarkBASIC Professional Discussion / What's with all the DarkBASIC hate?

I found that DarkBASIC is disliked in general. I notice a bunch of comments like "DarkBASIC sucks!" or "You should learn Blitz-basic/C++/etc."

So, is DarkBASIC incompetent compared to other game making languages, or is it misunderstood?

Usually these people have tried DBPro and failed, or are carrying around an opinion that should have died with BlitzBasic. Best to leave the trolls alone to play with their DX8.

I can't really agree that i have heard people hating on Dark Basic with a legit reason before.

Its great for starting out with game programming and also for experienced users. The only negative sides is that its not very fast and doesn't work too good on team projects.

I'm loving DarkBASIC Pro as a hobbiest programmer! It's great, got me thinking again, just like back in high school when my secret shame was writing games in Q-Basic, but then discovered alcohol.

But yeah, 12 years later, I've rekindled my passion of tinkering with basic code, and what better way to do so by making computer games! That actually work!

From my experience there are always people who think they are experts when it comes to computers. Half of them know nothing and just post what they have heard others say, the other half are probably people who have failed to make anything of note in the language. If you used FPS creator you would get a similar sort of response. Things like learn how to code, and, that isn't making a game, that's just clicking a mouse a bit. All those sort of comments have no actual basis in reality.
Most games these days are actually made using an editor of some kind. Companies that use the unreal or crysis engine have purchased that so as to avoid having to code the 3D engine themselves. They can use a proven engine and concentrate their efforts on the game rather than the intricacies of the 3D engine.
You will always get naysayers, and snobbish programmers who think c++ is the only language worth using. Best bet is to ignore them, or just say c++ is so SLOW, I prefer assembly. Generally I think you will find most people who comment like this actually couldn't program hello world if their life depended on it.
I don't much care for these types, as you may have gathered. they really are just showing their ignorance when they put down any project, whether it was made using gamemaker, fps creator, DB, etc. Whatever is used, there is nearly always a fair amount of time and work to be done. That is the main thing, not what you are using. Unless they have actually made something themselves (and that is unlikely), they will not appreciate how much time you have to put in to make even a fairly simple game.

There is a DB-hate campaign over at Blitz that has propogated for many, many years. There is a refusal to accept that products like FPSC, the NASA Lunar Lander 2020 software and Driving Practical made from DBP actually exist. (Yes, that is Buzz Aldrin using a DBP application!)

Luckily, we don't get the same mentality here, we just get on with coding.

Yeah, always feel bad for T3DGM users posting here, people can be autonegative about it.

As DVader says though, just turn around and ask to see what they have achieved that is so much better. I started out with SEUCK, a game creator on the C64 - and I wouldn't swap one single hour spent using that, these products are vehicles for creativity, in ways that a programming language could only dream of. I let my son loose on T3DGM and he loved it, nobody has the right to pee on a kids dreams like that and I hope we can get less tolerant of those attitudes.

When game developers look for new talent, they often look at people who have made new and original things in game creators.

I saw a couple of videos about EA on YouTube, and they often look at what people has done in Little Big Planet or Spore Creature Creator or other "creative" products. They are looking for people who are creative, not people who use the "right" programming language.
