it's been a while since i've been using DBP. i remember there was a dll command, "beep" or something, where you could set the pitch, length, and some other parameters. what was this command?

has anybody made any programs where the computer generates music? this is my next project, so if anybody has come up with concepts that i could build off of, it'd be useful. i tried searching music but the posts were about the load music command.

(i'm thinking of making a 2D grid, sort of like the tenori-on... i've taken discrete maths and multi var calculus, so i'm sure i'll be able to have some good fun with this array generating music)

You could make it sorta like a MOD Tracker...
And then the program could generate a sample from the music data, by mixing samples together...

You don't want to use beep to make music. Look into the memblock sound commands (i.e. MAKE MEMBLOCK FROM SOUND).

I actually got spurred a little bit by this, and started doing a framework for creating and modifying sounds using memblocks...

Only have a basic framework right now though... haven't gotten to write any code that uses it yet...

Bear in mind that this is not done yet, but I think there are some usefull stuff in there...

EDIT: There are a few matrix1util commands in there, so you need that to compile. Ie. find free memblock() a couple places, could easily be replaced so you don't need matrix1.

find free memblock() doesn't seem to be a command in my compiler. do i not have the latest version, or do you have a dll?

find free memblock is a Matrix1 Utils command. You can go get the Matrix1 dlls with a search (they are certainly worth getting), or write your own function that just loops through all the numbers until memblock exist returns false.

I've written a music tracker in DBPro (VSD Tracker), I just change the pitch of the sound to set the note (from a conversion table I found online). I had each sound as it's own track, using 64 'slots' for each pattern, just like soundtracker.

It's certainly possible, but I would suggest looking into the perftimer command, so you can get the timing perfect.

This thread:

is interesting, in that you just send the note info the midi dll. I haven't tried using it though.

I remember versions of BASIC that had the PLAY command, a sort of mini language inside BASIC, where you could send strings of notes, like "ABCCDDE#" etc. And there was also a DRAW command, a sort of mini language for vector style graphics - "U3D4R5" like that.

BBC Basic did this! I used it all the time back in the day.

I was experimenting to create c64 sid like music. You will need Ian's matrix1 to compile the snippet.

No place like 127.0.0.1 .
