Who remembers some of the classic text games of days gone by? I remember spending hours playing 'Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy' text game on the BBC computer. Or what about Animal, Vegetable or Mineral? That was a great game for those who remember it.

The reason i'm asking is this is because I have a game concept running around my head at the moment. Trouble is, it's text based. I actually think it's quite an ambitious project but I just wonder if anyone would even bother to look at it if there are no fast moving 3D images etc. It won't be all text, but the majority of the game will be. Would anyone even give it try?

I played lots of text games in the past. I suppose they are a bit outdated, I'd play one if it had graphics! LOL! J/K But you did say that yours had graphics, and I think that it's so easy to put screen pics in the game that it is really pointless making a text game today.

Text based games are fun . I'd play it. I made a text-based fighting (stupid, I know) game in the past myself...

I would look at it and played it... I like text games, but 3D games are even more fun I think, so I think you'd better spent your time on making a 3D game. But it's your choice of course, and I would play it, wheter it has graphics or not

And don't forget the best thing : If somebody used bad words, there should be good replies

Infocom games!

Zork!

*sigh*

Now I'm feeling nostalgic. But i doubt one would think they were very interesting if one played them today.

@Elleomea:
Thanks for the encouragement. Good luck with the parser....they are never fun to write (but are immensely satisfying when they work!).

@Damokles:
They'll be good replies, don't worry. They'll also be bad words from the NPCs!

@Microman:
Good games never lose their magic....even after 15 years!

The easiest text game to make is a series of choices, where the correct choice makes you proceed, and an incorrect choice ends the game. When I was younger, I used to make "The Adventures of Moomoo the Cow" games in QBasic. The logical choices were almost always the ones that got you killed.

I recommend everyone try 9:05. It's really short but it is such a neat game!

9:05 looks interesting but I was swarmed by a zillion choices of interpreter, and I didn't know which one to use. Couldn't see anything that said Z5.

There was a pretty decent British adventure-game-house as well. What on earth were they called? They made a string of text games with still pictures for the C64 and Amiga...

Oh well.

MicroMan: Are you think of Level 9? Most of their games were originally for the spectrum and BBC but they got ported to a whole bunch of others. But that's the most famous British text adventure company I can think of.
