It depends on a lot of things.

1. Size of level.

2. Dynamic entities and static entities in the level.

3. Number of NPC's.

4. Your PC hardware.

5. The amount of lighting and dynamic lighting you have.

A few more factors, but generally I get around 45-60 fps.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

lol.

People here will kill for an extra frame or two,of course higher Framerate is better.

The lower the framerate, the worse the game runs (more commonly known as lag by newbies(not server lag!))

45-60 is good,22-25 is unacceptable (for me atleast...)

If you have smooth movement: Everything's fine.

45 - 60 is fine, no worries!

Just for the information of everyone reading this topic, the human eye can only interpret 29.1 frames per second. This just so happens to be .9 frames away from what most movies are shot in (30 fps). If you keep your game above 30 FPS, it should be very smooth.

No no no...

None of you said the right answer.
@crispex,you are near to the right answer.
The human eyes can see 25 frame in each second and it means when your fps is upper than it then you have a suitable fps but if it goes upper then it means you have a good fps.
You can take a look at this page:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frame_rate

And I have toon boom animate pro(is a program for 2d animating)and in it's help it says the standard fps for 2d animation is 24 but as human can see 25 frame in each second then you can manually change the option to 25.

Have our guns was a mistake!!!

I believe from what I read on gamasutra.com one time was Microsoft will not even consider your game for the xbox arcade if it ever drops below 32 fps. I know that I have had Borderlands drop below that though, but I don't remember what article that was in...

Somewhere on their web site they had a quality and standards pdf for developers I'll try to find it for us.

Not necessarily, many (most I'd hope) of us can see a huge difference between 30 and 60 fps. Besides, it's not really as simple as an "eye framerate" number:
