EDIT: I'm trying to make 2 "effects" for my current project. One's a tractor beam using a fur shader:

And the other is Tesla coil lightning made using particle effects:

I titled this thread thinking I could enhance the first using particle effects, (though having some particles that look like plasma/energy coming off the beam would be ideal), but on a second look for the most part, I could get the effect I'm going for if I could add transparency on the rod I'm using with the fur shader to give the actual core of the beam a translucent look, as well as give it the ability to glow due to the adaptive bloom shader (in addition to the existing fur effect), and somehow also make it get brighter and then dimmer as if pulsing but with how the fur shader works, I don't know how to make any of the three happen (and as I said, having some particles that look like plasma/energy coming off the beam would be ideal).

The Tesla coil lightning should be the only actual particle effects in hindsight and neither process is being too friendly, particles or otherwise.

I'm pretty lost in it all

Also, how did they make the emancipation grid-thing in the original demo video? Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions

This is really not my area, but it would be cool to know.

Maybe an animated decal for the motion?

Its not exactly what may be after. But I think I have found something useful.

First see attached image, its of the settings for the particles.
They will move along an axis without any random movement or so.
Its a start.

Still I dont know how to do the "waves" inside the beam.

Hmm... Thanks. I'll have to take a look when I wake up today.

Updated the top And if a mod could change this title to something a bit more apropos, that'd be helpful

I had a idea: make a series of planes and give each plane a differed texture for the effect you want. Now put the planes close together and animate it so when one plane dissapers, another one is shown, giving the illussion of whatever effect you are trying to pull off. A simpler way is to use a single plane and use bonds animated shader to run a series of images.

That might actually be a pretty effective way to do the Tesla coil... I'll try it out.

At this point though, I really need to be able to add transparency and illuminant mapping (for the adaptive bloom shader) to my existing fur shader, but I have no clue how
